Hey guys, this might be a bit long winded but really need some thoughts on this one! Went to see the Health Visitor today for Jack's 7 month assessment, and well frankly she's a drip , all doom and gloom if you know what i mean..., she always focuses on the things he struggles with and not what he flourishes at. Anyway she was looking at his hips today and he likes to lay with his legs splayed with his knees up (bit like a frog on its back!!) she said it was really strange and hadn't seen a baby do that before and then when she put him on his tum to see if the creases matched on both sides of his legs she noticed one bottom crease was lower than the other. She told me to make an appointment with my GP as soon as I got home and could she arrange for a physio to come out.... needless to say she had me worried! When we got home and Jack was laid on the floor i started to study him whilst he lay there kicking and rolling and began to think that if he did have problems with his hips surely he wouldn't have so much strong and varied movement in his legs?? Any advice or thoughts on this would be great and we'll done for getting this far!!! promise not to be this long winded all the time LOL x x

As far as I know their little hips are checked over and over when they are born, well graces were anyway!! This is standard procedure for all babies too, not just because she has downs. It is also checked at their 8 week assesment.
Grace was breech from around 28weeks and spent some time in special care, so before she got home they arranged for her to have a hip scan. We went to the hospital last week to have this done and even though she has a click in her left hip and knee the scan was perfect. They dont want to see her again till she is seven months.
I would say that if there was a problem it would have been picked up by now by either your GP,Paed or Physio and that the HV is probably just covering herself to be sure.
Let us know how you get on
Shirley x

Thanks ladies, we have an appointment with the GP tomorrow, so i'll let you know how i get on. I would have though it'd have been picked up before now too especially as you say we see paediatricians, and another hv at the surgery every fortnight, so a lot more often than this one sees him! I'm sure it will be fine, thanks for your replies xx x

I would put it down to their VERY flexible joints. Holly freaks me out sometimes. She will sit on the floor with her legs out infront and then lie FLAT. She will then move her legs out to the side and then lie on her tum with her legs out. Its like watching a world class gymnast... Scary baby... LOL

Did any of you see the kids on that programme 'our 27 kids' they were brilliant gymnasts. I was speaking to the physio the other day and asked if it was ok for little ones with downs to take part in such activites. She said it is fine. So guess were Grace will be going when she is old enough lol !!

thats good to know - I read a book on Downs (wasn't very good) and it seemed to say that there was a potential problem with the neck that had to be checked out before they could take part in any sport... dunno what it was. Any idea?

The only thing they suggest is that you don't teach them rolly pollys until their necks can cope with it (around 3 or 4 I think)

Yeah the physio at the conference at the weekend was telling us that years ago they used to do that neck test on all DS children before alllowing them to take part in contact sports. She said that it is not carried out now as the results were always good.

So are you gonna send Charlie to gymnastics then, I think it would be great for them cause it will keep them fit too as little ones with DS are more prone to being overweight as well as having lots of fun.

Hi MrsDavies, Jess frogs her legs when she lies on her back and i thought this was a normal thing all babies do , as i can remember my son doing it and sister in law said her baby does it , but jesses physion said i had to get her out of doing it and to keep her legs straight when she is in bed by putting rolled towels by her legs to keep them straight , and when holding her to hold her legs down straight , and the best one is to hold her legs straight when i am feeding her , like i have enough hands !!!! i cant see a problem with the frogging of legs Jess seems to only do when she is getting comfy and she has great muscle tome in her legs always kicking ad wanting to stand up. I dont know if i should be worrying as the physio said if i dont get her to straighten her legs she will find it harder to walk ! , i must say i am a bit mixed up , she only spends an hour with jess a month so she doesnt see everything else she does ! Lol maybe i should get a staright jacket for little jess then she cant move full stop x
in the pic on our signiture she has her legs frogged !

Hi Heidi, the results from the scan came back negative so there was no problem just an overcautious midwife and a terrified new mum!!! I haven't seen Jack doing his frogs legs at all over the past couple of months so perhaps it was just a phase!! and like Jess he is always kicking so i don't worry about it anymore! I shouldn't worry too much about your physiotherapist like you say she only sees Jess once a week and its amazing what our babies can do when they think no one is watching! lol
