Hi there
I hope this is the right place to introduce us. Lizzie was born on 28th November 2007, the first child for both my DH and me. We had had several unsuccessful goes at IVF and were on what was to be our last attempt when we got lucky. We're both so grateful to have her.
We didn't do any of the pre-natal testing for Downs because I knew there was no way I would have a termination and I didn;t want to do anything to put the pregnancy at risk, and we decided there was no point in finding out whether we were low or high risk for Downs if we were not prepared to find out for certain, so we did not know Lizzie had Downs before she was born.
I found out while I was still being sewn up after my c/section. The docs told my DH that they thought she had Downs features and would do the necessary blood test, and he immediatly told me. At the time I was too freaked out by the whole Caesarian experience to take it on board, but gradually started to take it in over the next few days. I can't pretend that I have completely got my head round it yet, but we're working on it.
Once the Downs diagnosis was confirmed, the hospital ran the usual checks including an echocardiogram and this picked up that Lizzie has a 6 mm VSD hole in her heart. Our local hospital has a tie-up with the Royal Brompton and a consultant from there saw Lizzie in January and said she will need surgery for it sooner rather than later. We are going to the Brompton for further tests on 25th March and will know more after that.
Meanwhile, Lizzie is a lovely baby who charms everyone she meets. My DH and I sing in a choir and she comes to choir practices, much to the delight of the other singers. She loves being sung to at home, and has the most devoted Daddy you could wish for. He said he surprised himself with how soppy he is with her!
We will be glad once Lizzie's heart is sorted out, and would welcome any advice from those of you who have been there before us, or just the chance to chat to other parents in similar situations.
Thanks and best wishes
