Hi there, Really close friends of ours have a 5 month old little boy, they are fantastic parents. He had a hole in the heart operation about a month ago now, he is doing great but his Mummy is very down and seem's to be going through the feelings she had when he was first born. She has been to a local Down's Syndrome gathering but it just bought her down even more. Is there anything I can do to help her, she talks openly to me about her feelings which I guess is a good start. Please can anyone help? Lisajane

Hi Lisajane,
I have a 17 1/2 month daughter called Lucy. She has Downs and has had the heart op as well. I have started to feel better only recently, not about Lucy, but about her situation. I think when she was born all I heard was the heart problem and the Downs took a back seat. After her op and recovery the Downs then came to the fore and I started to feel down. It came to a head when we were away on holiday. My sister in law gave birth (very quickly and without any problems) to a little girl and I found it very difficult to see her and the baby. After a few weeks of feeling very down I was browsing and came across an article called "Welcome to Holland" (look in stories and poems). This said exactly what I was trying to say to all my friends.
I hope this helps your friend, I know it helped me no end.
Luv Nicola

hi lisa, i have a little boy marshal who is eight months old whom also had open heart surgery when he was 10weks old. Its tough going in them first few months but believe me it does get better and those dark days get few and far between. Downs also took a back seat for me too in those early months too its only later when you know their strong and well that it creeps in to your thoughts, but as time goes by you start to see things diferently. I cant explain how this happens or how these days get less but they do and i thought at one point that wouldnt be possible. Just be there for her and keep sending those positive vibes. luv katie x

I'm here, too. Another uncle to Josh - or, in this case, Great Uncle.
