Its great to hear. does that mean you get a disabled parking badge? I have just got my forms through for Williams new claim, he is 2 and a half. From what age do they qualify for mobility? can anyone give me any tips for filling it in, I should have photocopied the last one because I have forgot what kind of examples to put down, it is hard to know what a normal child of 2 and a half would be doing (walking is the obvious one and he is heavy now!).

Hi everyone, My little girl grace isd only 4 weeks old, people have told me that we are able to claim for benefits. I dont know much about them as my husband and I have always worked full time. I would like to be able to stay at home but am the main earner in the house so my husband may give up work. If we were entitled to benefits of some sort it would greatly help us to do this. Any advise on how to go about applying and what to apply for would be great. Thanks Shirley xx

Hi Shirley Just ring the DLA up and ask for an application pack, I work in the civil service but for Child support so the number u need is 02890 906182 (CastleCourt in Belfast) or www.dsdni.gov.uk. You can apply for DLA and carers allowance but they'd be able to tell u if there are any more benefits u can go for. Any q's just pm me and i'll c what I can do! xx

hi shirley the whole benfits thing is a mine field.
You can claim DLA when your child is 3 months, but at the same time you have to claim for carers allowance if you which to recieve this. it works out about £2400 a year and you have to be caring for someone who's on medium or higher rate DLA for at least 35 hrs a week.
Quite often you'll get turned down for DLA so you have to appeal, i was told to keep appealing until we got medium rate. originally turned down, then lower rate, then went to a tribunal hearing a yr later and got medium.
we had a key worker help us fill out the forms, and keep a photo copy. then when it was turned down got a special needs social worker to appeal. it is best to have someone else help who's done it before, as its amazing what extra work you don't realise your doing. you also have write everything very negatively.
good luck hope you recieve it first time

Get someone who knows about these things to help you (try the CAB) if you can and write the worst case scenario! It's not the fact that your child has DS that matters - it's how it affects them and the difference between their needs and those of a "normal" child of the same age. I never managed to fill it in until my DD was 3 (which is the age they can be given higher rate mobility - lower rate mobility is available from 5) simply because I always got stuck on the difference between the amount of care she needed and the level I gave her older siblings. Eventually it was easier to see the difference and a kind friend who works for the CAB also helped me. When I had to reapply earlier this year I did it online and saved it - I'm hoping it will be even easier next time as a result!

hi there just to let you know i have already put in for our blue badge apparently some departments will consider a child at 2 as this is the usual upper age limit for children walking so i'm keeping my fingers crossed.Does anyone know how soon before the childs 3rd birthday can you put a claim in for the mobility allowance many thanx shell xxxxxxx

Hiya
Just thought i'd mention
don't sent back renewals quickly because if they are going to reduce your rate they'll do it next payment and i've been told they send them out months in advance.
Also remember 15 minute rule.
Hope this helps

Do you all claim DLA? ? We dont, I dont think James has any extra care. :/ He is a really easy baby to care for. I have no idea what I would put on the form and im sure we would get turned down.

your welcum they just want to know how muchextra time you spend caring for james because obviously it takes these special babes a little longer to learn alot of things like walking, washing, tioletting etc and they need physio and portage and little things like that.im not very good with them i just managed mine but as i said pink toronto girl can put you on the right track and i am sure we could all offer little titbits or advice if you need it , or you could contact your local benefits agency who will put you in touch with the right person, oh hold on i'll have a look later for the telephone number andf post it on here for you, your health visitor should also be able toadvise you , and maybe give you a hand filling it in i'll put the number on later got to sort out babes luv shell, charlie and jasmin xxxxx

Hi gemma, I didn't get it for Lisa until she was a year old so you'll defo be entitled now.Lisa is very easy too, but you've got to remember all the other appointments you have to keep, and don't forget to write at the begining of every answer 'James has downs syndrome so blah blah' it worked for Lisa, and just put down worse case scenario, also, apparenlty they can't speak to any of the professionals you see unless you give them permission which you don't have to do. The reason DLA have given Lisa middle rate DLA is because she isn't potty trained!! Well I wouldn't have thought many kids were a 1 year old lol!
Don't forget, if you get middle rate DLA you are entitled to carers allowance also, I get £145 every 4 weeks carers allowance, and Lisa gets £187 every 4 weeks DLA, so its worth you going for it! Think of the money you could be spending on some decent learning toys for the kids?!
You wil get these benefit if your working or on other benefits, if you are on Income support they also give you a bit extra for having a disabled child, and the same goes for working tax credits.
Get your forms in and if you nedd any help, come on here and ask.
Just remember as well, that although he's coming on well, he isn't at the stage that 'normal' (hate doing that!!) kids are. Remember he is a bit less supple, and his co-ordination isn't going to be as spot on. It's hard to remember all these little things that we don't really notice....pull out all the stops!!!
Good luck!!

They always send the renewal forms early. My second son receives DLa because of his severe learning diificulties etc. and his runs out this year in may and I received the forms for renewal back at the end of November- finally completed them in jan after Rachel born , so they sent a few reminder letters but he did get his again. Just remember worst case / day that you have with little one - I know its really hard as we all celebrate the positive things in their lives but the benefits people don't. best of luck filling them in again
