Well, Thomas had his hearing app this morning and it seems like he definately has a hearing problem. We don't know how severe at the moment but we can't go back for more tests until he is 7 months old!!!! His hearing problem seems to be conductive which I know a lot of children with Downs have. The audiologist says that we may have to look at gromits if his ear canals are large enough (at the minute they're not!!) or possibly hearing aids. All this is in the future tho so its a bit unknown yet. I'm just so worried that this will slow down Thomas' develpment even more. Yet another hurdle to overcome in Thomas' short life....

hi vikki charlie has the same problem we have been waiting 18 months for grommits but charlie is to small(he's only 19lb and the size of a 6 month old) we have tried many hearing aids but he hates them they last all of 2 minutes, but we noticed about a year ago that he lip reads, bless him, it has slowed his speech he only says 3 words which he's been saying for 2 years but i think its purely down to the individual child, we have also been waiting over a year for speech therapist which has'nt helped, although he does use very limited makaton, your not on your own hun

Push for makaton hunni. Holly had her 3rd test on wednesday and thankfully it was clear. My youngest lad had to have grommets in earlier this year and OMG they make a huge difference.
I'm sure you are feeling like "OMG what else??" but be thankful they have picked up on it now rather than when he is 3 & 4 and not speaking. At least now you can teach him to communicate by signs and take a big positive step.

brandon had his tonsils out and grommits put in over a year ago.the reason for this was he had sleep apnea which means he stops breathing when asleep and very poor hearing.after the grommits was put in he had alot of ear infections but just had hearing test and his hearing is crystal clear also the grommits have fallen out.this is fantastic news as a year ago we thought he was going to have hearing aids in both ears.the grommits stopped all the glue blocking his hearing as he has glue ear so i can only give postitive response to grommits even if the op is itself is upseting.

Can anyone recommend a good baby signing book? I know Thomas is only 4 months but I reakon it'll take me a good while to get the hang of signing (lol) and I don't want Thomas to miss out. x

I've mentioned these books in another thread (Makaton?) but they are really lovely and child (and parent!) friendly. They are big board books for kids by Annie Kubler - I got them off Amazon. They've got things like - my first 50 signs and my first animal signs. They've aslo got really cute pictures in them. I cant wait to use them with Daniel, but he just licks the pages at the mo! I know that makaton do a teach at home kit, but dont where to get that from!! There is a website with all the stuff... hang on I'll see if I can find it...

My dd had grommets put in when she was about 18 months old. At the time they also did a test with electrodes and thought she had been born with a hearing problem. They gave us a hearing aid but she wouldnt leave it in. A year later, when they had to have a second attempt at unblocking one of her tear ducts, they put a grommet back in one ear. As her hearing gradually improved they decided she hadn't been born with a problem after all and when she was 5 they decided her hearing was within the normal range - hooray! I am very glad we had the grommets put in as I'm sure it made a big difference.
Using Makaton also helped her speech development; I went on a course run by the local Speech Therapy department but I reckon I learnt most signs by singing songs! The Makaton project people sell a book of children's songs.
