i had the barts tests and was called back to the hospital a week later for the results when they told me that the child i was carrying had a 1 in 130 chance of having down syndrome, i knew then that i didnt want to have any invasive tests dont to find out as no mater what, this baby was going to be loved so i put it to the back of my head and enjoyed the rest of my pregnancy, i would be lying if i said that i didnt think about it and a few times, i wuold just rest my hand on my bump and wonder what the future held for my baby if it turned out that he did have downs (i didnt actually know i was carrying a boy) also, every now and again, i would look at adam when he was looking at my bump and could see that he was thinking the same, and on these occasions, i would say 'what if??' but he always just held my hand, or rested his hand on my bump and most of the time, he wouldnt say much back.
the day i went into labour was quite a hard day for adam as he had been working nights just a couple of days before and as i had been having contractions most of the night, he had no sleep.
when i gave birth to josh, one of the first things i done was look at him to see if i could see if he had downs, i noticed a few things, such as his eyes and the fact that he kept poking his tounge out. i mentioned it to adam and he looked at him and said that he was fine, so i didnt say anything then,
when adam went to get some food, a midwife came in to check on me and i said to ther that the reason we has been placed under consulant led was that the test had come back as high risk and that i was a bit concerned with a few things, she came over and looked at him, and said that she wasnt too sure and she went to get the ward midwife, she came back and done a few basic checks on him and said that yesh she thought that he was and that she was going to arrange the tests to give a definitive answer, when she went out, the midwife i initialiy told turned to me and said 'you knew, didnt you?' and i just nodded my head.
josh was taken away to have the tests done and as it was a friday, we had to wait until the monday, in the meantime, we had to stay in the hospital incase there were any problems. when he came back, they said that he did have downs and that they thpought it was mosaics because he had very soft features.
that evening, josh hadnt fed as he was having difficulty latching on so they put a tube in and he had 3 feeds through that in all, but he had to wait until sunday to have it removed.
monday, adam came to the hospital early to wait for the results with me, up until then, we hadnt thought about how life changing the results could be!! the results came back and they told us that it was full downs. and that we had to stay in hospital until the following day for him to have an echo, he had one the following evening but as the cosultant was away, we had to wait until the following day for the consultant to look at it, the consultant said that josh had a small hole in his heard which is the norm for newborn babies and that we hae to go back when josh is 4 months old, the only thing wehave to worry about with that is if the hole in his heart has grown, if it is still there and the same size or smaller then that is fine.
when josh had his 8 week check up, i told the doctor about the echo and she said that she couldnt hear the hole although adam thinks that it is only something you can see, so he is not holding his breath
josh is now 11 and a half weeks and i really cant imagine him being any different.
we are so happy with him and when he smiles in the morning, it is enough to brighten our whole day up.
