Not sure if anyone else has had this problem but thought I'd ask the question just in case. Harrison chews his hands alot, well most of the time!, and it makes his hands very sore. We've tried lots of difference creams, vaseline, hydrocortisone etc. We've tried distracting him or holding his hands to stop him but that doesn't work. Lately I've been trying to get him to chew on 'chewy tubes' which are supposed to help improve the muscle tone in his face - this has helped a bit but he still prefers to chew on his hands and they are still so sore. I've been looking on the internet and I'm thinking about trying some of the cream that helps stop people biting their nails which apparently tastes horrid so maybe that will deter him but at the moment I'm willing to try anything! I'm hoping we actually get a decent summer this year so that I can take him in the sea because I've found the only thing that has worked in the past is sea water and lots of it!! Does anyone else have a little one who wants to chew on things all the time??

Oh, and I'm reading a book at the moment about sensory processing and apparently when a child wants to chew all the time like this it's called 'sensory seeking'. I swear I've learnt more since having Harry than in all my years before!!

Caleb chews anything and everything though he has great mouth tone so thats good! He makes his face wet and sore though. He does it more when he is tired or bored.
What did the book say about sensory seeking?

The book that I mentioned is really heavy-going so I've been a bit lazy and tried to scan through the bits that are relevant for Harry. 'Sensory seeking' refers to children who are seeking extra sensation through things like chewing or sometimes they like a certain texture of something, it can be lots of different things. With the chewing I've been told that it's something that gets better as they get older and their muscles get stronger, Harry has always had very poor muscle tone so it will take him a bit longer. Harry's face gets wet and sore too, poor little man has me constantly smearing vaseline on his face. At the moment he is just fixated on chewing his hands and they are so sore, have just been putting hydrocortisone cream on as the only time he doesn't seem to be chewing his hands is when he's asleep! Luckily he's a heavy sleeper, lol.

Thats all really interesting - Daniel used to chew his hands too and make them sore. He doesnt anymore, but waggles ANYTHING in his hands... ALL the time!! I wonder if thats a similar thing? He'll happily waggle for hours!! We are starting to wonder if he was born with 'Action Man' 360 degrees swivel hands!!

Brodie chews his hands all the time too but they don't seem to get sore. He does drive me insane though cause he makes an "aaahh yaaa ahhhh" noise all the time he's doing it! I was thinking of trying that stuff that stops you biting your nails on him too but knowing Brodie who eats anything and everything, including his eczma cream, it's not gonna stop him!

Tina, Harry quite often makes a noise like that when he's chewing his hands too! Almost like he's chatting away to himself! Must admit Harry will eat pretty much anything and everything too which made me think maybe that cream wouldn't work, but I've found some which apparently has 'natural' products in it, so at least he won't do himself any harm if he decides to eat it instead!! I might give it a go. I mentioned the problem to the nurse when Harry had his pre-school jabs on Tuesday and she suggested I put sudocream on at night and then cover the hands which luckily is helping at the mo.

Caleb got 2 teeth and promtly stopped chewing so that answers that for me! He still likes to put things in his mouth and crawl off looking a bit like a dog with a toy!!
