Just after a little advice really. Ever since I weaned Jasmine at around 4 months, I have had problems getting her to drink fluids. At first I tried loads of different cups and beakers and tried her via bottle but the only thing she will drink is her milk and to be honest, most of the time she will take or leave that unless she is tired then it's more of a comfort thing. I recently found a new cup (thanks Tracey & Joshy) which has a silicone teat and she seems to like this and tries to drink it herself. Basically as soon as the fluid hits her mouth she either gets too much and chokes or she spits it out like a fountain. I've tried different drinks and tastes but to no avail.
It probably seems quite trivial but I worry about dehydration when it is hot weather and she does get constipated which i am sure is due to lack of fluids.
I have found that she will take more if she has it out of an open cup / beaker, i.e. no lid but I can't let her do that herself and even with my help she drowns herself.
Has any one got any tips or suggestions as to why she might not like drinking? Her sucking action is great but I wonder whether it is something to do with her swallowing action?
I am sorry i cant offer any advice but i have exactly the same problem with Rosie! She only has milk and i have tried a few cups with spouts (either ones to suck or ones that pour) and if she gets any water in her mouth she just spits it out. She seems to just like chewing or mouthing the spout lol. Lets hope someone can come up with some good suggestions as Rosie also suffers with bad constipation and is on Lactulose and Movicol.
This sounds just like George. I think I've bought every cup or beaker on the market and at the moment he is back drinking juice out of a bottle with a teat - but I'd rather that than him not drinking. If your little ones like drinking from a cup the doctor should be able to prescribe some thickener - its called Carobel and its by Cow and Gate, I did try George with this and it did help him with a cup as he was having the same problem as yours with it coming out to fast, but he is a fussy little monkey and won;t drink from a cup at the mo. Hope this helps xxx
hello i have had this problem tried every beaker under the sun and when we had the warm weather i had to go back to the bottle. i could never get her to feed herself but i discovered the tt nuby beaker its a strange looking thinkg with a silicon teat and handles its fab she took a good drink there with her dinner by holding it herself you could try that beaker and see what happens. i also found that most had too gast a flow so when using the bottle i got the asda vari flow teats so she had her diluting on no1 slow flow and milk on 3 fast flow
I have no luck at all getting Lucy to drink from a beaker. She has always liked water though and will drink 9- 18oz a day but it's from her bottle. Lucy hates the hard spout on the beakers I might try find that one you've got michelle and give that a whirl!!!
Hi Michelle, the beaker you mentioned is the one I have recently bought and as you say, she does drink better from it but still less than an oz at a time. Must admit i haven't tried her wth water or juice in a bottle for a few months so i might just give it another go and then see if she takes more. Last time she just did exactly the same. I am sure it's the consitency rather than anything else. Thanks girls.
Gemma is exactly the same, will only drink milk from a bottle. I have so many cups and beakers in my cupboard I could set up my own shop. lol. I use to get really concerned but I give Gemma yogurts and frutpura deserts and she gets about 30z of fluid from each one of them, and if she has cottage pie or fishermans pie or something like that for her tea I add a bit of water too that. She also has her milk on her weetabix. Her nappies are always wet and the doctors say it is fine what she is having, so I just keep trying her with different cups in the hope that oneday she will like one of them. Hope that helps. Debbie and Gemma x
lucy it might be the flow of the teat hmm i wonder if you can get spares will have a nosey kimmy has to have slow flow with bottle but the teat with the nuby is medium wich suits her ok at min for juice but need faster for milk lol
