I dont know about a tv programme but there is a radio interview on tonite on BBC Radio 4 at 8pm, about how more people are choosing to have children with DS rather than abort them which can only be a good thing. x

Theres loads in the news at the mo and definately the radio program is on radio 4 this eve. Its all to do with the rise in births of children with ds and lots of positive stories about how times have changed and thatds isnt really a 'negative' thing anymore. All good stuff!! Hooray!

hi all the just listened to the programme on Radio 4 what did you think?
I thought there was a mix of postive and negative i agree that with the rise in DS births there is a greater need for services for the future of our adults so they can have greater independence and more people should lobby for that.
Maybe im being sensitive but i thought there were a few unnecessary things said like "he wears a nappy to school and cant speak well" and also the lying down on the way home. Ewan doesnt have Downs Syndrome and used to lie down and scream on the footpath when he didnt want to be shopping!!
Personally, although im not very experienced as Lauras so young but im positive about the future for her and wouldnt have her any other way. We didnt know before she was born but like the other families we would have continued had we known.
Maybe im totally missing the point

I wasnt that impressed with it. I think they mentioned alot of negative things like you say the wearing of nappies to school, cant speak and lying down on the way home from school. Why didnt they mention any of the positive things about the children. The way it came across was that as they got older they would just be a burden to society and would just end up living at home with their parents.

I agree that it seemed quite negative - loads of kids have tantrums on the way home from school. I have just been through the transition stage for my son Jason who has learning difficulties , from finishing college to a more independent living, there are places & people out there who work for an independent future for our young adults. We were very sure in the sensible side of our minds that Jason should not live at home with us indefinetley, we have a responsibilty as parents to love them & let them go as we do with all our kids. Our children will not have to live out their adult lives with us (parents) as long as we are prepared to let them go & by insisting that they are given a right to independent living ( how ever supported it may need to be ) then the authorities will have to sit up & listen & ensure that facilities do become available for the future. Sorry - a bit of a rant, getting bolshy in my old age.

Hi all,
If you have digital telly, there is a programme on next wed (3rd Dec) on Sky Real Lives called A Mother like Alex. It's on at 9pm. I've not seen it before. It's about a woman who has adopted 8 special needs kids, 7 of them have Down's. Got my Sky+ box set already!

I read a story about the lady who adopted the children in the sun newspaper about two weeks ago. I think it's on the suns website too. She sounds an amazing person I can't wait to see the t.v. program.
