Hi everyone, haven't been on and posted for a long while, but do lurk from time to time to see how everyone is doing, and to all those that don't know me, "hi" lol ;D.
Leo is way to be assesed for autism, although we are pretty sure we know what the results will be, wanted to know if I am alone on here or if there are others with DS-ASD? Seems to be little info available.

Hi Tace - I don't have any personal experience of ASD and DS, but at the moment Daniel is part of a big research study looking into Children with DS and autism, and whether or not they can use the same 'checklists' for autism on a child with DS that they do on a typically developing child. Anyway, I've just looked on their website (Its a charity called Down Syndrome Education International and is a big centre for all sorts of research with DS) and they do have info on autism and DS. The website is www.downsed.org - if you then type in autism in their search box, all the links come up. They are quite far away from you, but VERY friendly and I'm sure they could steer you in the right direction for books/help etc if you emailed or rang them. Hope thats helps! xx

Hiya, I think it's quite a common link - I was chatting with caleb's portage lady about it just last week. I've seen training days advertised through the DSA for "dual diagnosis" or something like that.

Hi Max, thanks for the reply, it seems around 10% of children with DS are diagnosed with having ASD, so its not as common as in "normal" kids. There is not a huge amount of info out there but am finding little bits here and there, it would as am sure you understand, be nice to talk to other parents in the same situation, hence the post. We will keep looking. Unfotunatley we do not have portage here, or much else for that matter, but Leo is seen by Dr Pat Charlton at Raeden Centre in Aberdeen (about 30 miles away) where his assesment will be.

Leo's assesment was inconclusive!! How frustrating lol! But its good to have a base, and it was a positive week all in all, if a bit hard. He is starting mainstream nursery one session a week, which we feel might help. Too much to go into in detail, but thats the long and short of it.

Hi Tace, was interested to read that Leo had been assessed because i have often thought that Harry has autistic tendencies. I mentioned it recently to his teacher & she said in her experience quite often kids with ds have similar traits but it doesn't necessarily mean Harry is autistic. Since I was having those concerns he has started doing alot better at school so I'm just going to keep an eye on how things go. Hope Leo is doing ok xxx
