Had a health visitor call on lucy today, but she made me stop and think so thought i would ask you ... Health visitor says Lucy needs iron in her diet and that her diet is appalling She also said to stop Lucy drinking so much Juice!! However Lucy has chronic constipation and compensated hypothyroidism. Which if i understand correctly causes severe constipation, bowel clinic says she needs to drink loads and she also has 1-2 movicol sachets per day. I know iron can make constipation worse, but looking at lucys diet she has next to no iron at all in her diet. she will only eat chicken, bread, biscuits and fruit. im trying to weigh up what to do?? Today has been a bad day for lucys bowels and she has needed her full dose of movicol there have been lots of tears and i've been unable to leave the house as she gets really distressed when pooing (sorry TMI) Also im wondering if the amount of juice is too much she has had approx 12 x9 oz bottles (tests for diabeties have been fine) sorry i know thats alot of probs, but if anyone can help on any of it i would really appreciate it. She's due for her MOT soon so i might ask for a longer appointment haha xx ,

Hi Karen, Poor Lucy it must be so horrible for her to be constipated. I don't have any personal experience apart from I know when i took iron during pregnancy it did cause constpation. Rachel is like Lucy will only drink juice , a little bit of milk sometimes . It's very difficult getting toddlers to eat a balanced diet , if they decide they don't want to eat soemthing they either don't or they spit it out . All of my children have gone through fads as they were growing up & they're just fine now. I think or hope that what your HV was saying is ideally Lucy needs to have more balance , i give Rachel a vitamin supplement every other day, i know that's not ideal but i think well just in case she's short in her diet but it doesn't have iron in it. I think your best bet is to talk with Lucy's paed at her mot(or sooner if you want ) & say that you're concerned by what the HV said , after all they know her best & also with her medical needs its important to know what's best . After all do you know how much experience of DS children with Lucy's particular needs this HV has had ? The HV that saw me after I had Rachel had never had a family with a child with DS !! Sorry if this is no help at all. xSusan

oh crikey, your health visitor would have a field day if she met harry then, he drinks juice all day sometimes!! in all seriousness though, i would speak to the paed about it and not take the health visitor too seriously. as i said harry drinks alot of juice too but i know him well enough to know that if he doesn't then he just ends up constipated like Lucy and that is awful for them.
i would be more inclined to look at Lucy's overall health and if her paed is happy she is putting on weight and keeping well then i wouldn't have thought there was an issue. sometimes health visitors can do more harm than good when they start advising on children when they don't fully understand the situation.
hope the 'MOT' went ok if its already been & gone xxx
