You may have seen this rant on my FB but thought I'd share it here : Yesterday I had an 'interesting' conversation with an aquaintance "Rachel's doing so well" they said, "yes " I replied ." ,She's growing into a lovely little girl now, you'd never know... " - and then off they went down the road .........
What the bloody hell is that suppose to mean that because she has Downs syndrome you suppose she wouldn't be a lovely little girl, that she'd be some dribbling monster or something. Rachel was a lovely baby & Rachel is a lovely little girl & she will be a lovely teenager & woman - what's your problem!!!!
Of course I was too polite to say any of this but I 'm mad as hell that someone could be so narrow minded etc etc . But I think I need to be stronger next time someone says something as it's clear that still people are ill informed & holding old fashioned ideas about DS. OK rant over. xSusan
I feel the same - I seem to come up with something witty and great to say back AFTER the actual time - guess it always takes us by surprise! (and we are NICE people!!) Although I quite like it when people are 'surprised' by Daniel as it does go some way to breaking those stereotypes... even if the lady was a complete numb nut in what she said (which she was!) hopefully somewhere in the corner of her brain, Rachel has sneaked in there to help her change her ideas... xx
those kind of comments make me mad, i know what you mean though, i often wonder how is the best way to respond to a comment like that. i wonder if the person that said that to you thought afterwards what a stupid thing to say & felt bad about it, or did they just not realise how ignorant the comment was xx
