Hi, we've had a letter off George's paediatrician today about his thyroid test a couple of weeks ago. She said it suggests that his thyroid is slowing down and they will repeat the test in 3 months time. Can anyone advise on what this could mean. I'm dreading the test again as they really struggled to find a vein last time, let alone what the results will show x

Hi ive just :read your post about Georges thyroid. I know it was a while ago but I thought I would tell you about Gemma. Gemmas thyroid was slowing down, so she had blood tests a couple of months later , and her Consultant decided to put her on medication. She is on 5ml of thyroxine once a day, this is the lowest dose. She is having blood tests in a couple of weeks so I am hoping they are ok and she can stay on the lowest dose. Her last lot of blood tests were normal due to the medicine. She has no side effects at all from the medication, infact she is full of beans. LOL. Its best to get it sorted as there are alot of side effects from under active thyroids. They always struggle to get blood out of Gemma, she had so much taken when she had her heart ops, its a job for them to find any decent veins. They usually spray her first which numbs the area they are trying to get the blood out of. Hope this has helped, hope I havent waffled too much. x

Hi, thanks so much for that. We go back for his blood tests on sept 24th, I'm dreading it as he cried so much last time. Did Gemma have any symptoms that you had noticed before she got her meds. Thanks again xx ps, I've just been reading your daughter Becca's post about Gemma, she sounds like such a grown up and lovely girl, you must be very proud x

Hi, Gemma had no symptoms, I was really surprised when they said her thyroid was slowing down but I suppose if they leave it they start to get symptoms. I think they get tired and lethargic.I was really worried about her going on the medicine but she has been fine and we just give it to her once a day no problem. We used to put cream on Gemmas hands an hour before her blood test and cover it in a plaster (well it was like cling film and this numbed her hands completely. She has sussed how to pull it off so now they just spray the area which numbs it. She doesnt like sitting still but I dont think it hurts her too much. Becca is a good girl (she does have her moments) shes great with Gemma and very proud of her. They went through a lot when she had her op as they only lost their Nan a few weeks before so it was a tough time but we got thought it. If George does need medicine I am sure he will be fine on it. xx

Jack got on well. They put the magic cream on his arms and they told us to come back in an hour. We went back two nurses had to hold Jack down as he is such a wriggler and it was done. I think that it took more out of me than him.
Just waiting on the results now as well.

Glad Jack was ok. Gemma has blood test tomorrow for her thyroid. We get the results next Tuesday when she sees her Consultant. Hopefully it will have stayed ok and we wont have to increase her medication.

Gemmas blood test was absolutely fine, which was great news because it means she can stay on the lowest dose of thyroid medication. Her Consultant was really pleased with her and said her heart was doing brilliantly and she was coming on really well. x

Grace had her thyroid checked on tuesday, still waiting for the results though. They say that her constipation is a sign on and underavtive thyroid. We will wait and see

If it is underactive and they start her on medication at least it may stop her being constipated. Gemma is on medication for her thyroid and she is fine on it. XX

Got a call from the clinic yesterday to say that Jacks thyroid results were back. There were just border line and the hormone that produces the thyroid was a bit on the high side, which say is nothing to worry about at the moment but they wanted to do another blood test.
Took Jack to the hospital yesterday afternoon for that we are waiting on results

Sharon, Good luck with Jack's new results, i hope they come back ok x
Shirley, I didn't know that constipation was a sign, could explain why George is still suffering from it. Hopefully if they give him thyroid med it will sort that out for him aswel. Good luck with Grace's results x

Hi Claire and Shirley
I was told that Downs suffer from constipation as they cannot hold on to the fluid in their sysem so therefore give them alot to drink.

I try very hard to give grace loads to drink but unfortunatley she just doesnt take it, even the lactulose doesnt work that well
Thanks for the advise anyway

Thanks debs, George used to be terrible for drinking and would only drink milk but now he'll have juice and water x
Shirley, George used to have lactulose but it never really cleared him and they just kept increasing his dosage. He's now on movicol every day and he usually mangages a dirty nappy each day. Its still not how you would expect a dirty nappy to be (looks more like a little rabbits been in there!), but at least he's not being bunged up for days on end like before x

She eats lots of fruit and veg but wont take any juice only small drinks of water and her milk. Hopefully the results will come through soon and we will know if it is her thyroid that is causing it
