hi everyone just wondered if anyone had any advice or ideas to help me ! Since charlie started nursery he has had constant diarrheor (sp) he has always been constipated since birth and has been prescribed lactulose, senna, glycerin suppositories and movicol, which he has not had since september.i dont mean to sound gross but it is so smelly it is foul! he has no sickness with it! the school said it's because he picks things up !,but his one to one said he doesnt. We have cut out all fruit and vegetables to see if they caused it but no difference and obviously not very good for his diet.So he's back on them and still the same . Anyway i was wondering if anyone knows of anything that could possibly cause this or if they have experienced the same problems ,it's driving us all nuts, poor charlie has only had 9 mornings at nursery since september, i wondered if it was time to visit his paed ? love shell xxxxxxxxx

Maybe its connected to him starting nursery, do you think it worries him going to nursery. I would definitley get it checked out by a doctor xx

could be rotavirus - a friend of mine's child had it and it lasted AGES so with DS added might take him even longer - I'd take him to the Dr for anything that lasted that long. poor little mite hope it ends soon. xxx

Hi, I'm sorry I can't offer any advice, just wanted to say that I hope Charlie is better soon, and I'd definately get onto the doc about it. Maybe he has developed a food intolerance? x

that is exactly what i was thinking claire i think in total it has lasted 7 weeks with him only having 2 reasonably normal poohs , thanx everyone for your replies i will definetly take him to the doctors tomorrow. He isn't ill with it but just not totally hiself and he is still fairly active, but he does keep havin little outbursts of cryin for no apparent reason,we cant decide if itd cos he is spoilt and he knows if he cries he will get picked up or if there is something wrong because he cant speak he cant tell us bless him lots of love shell xxxxx

hi shell
is it diahreah(sp) as in runny stools or the number of times he goes a day?
its just saul was also constipated constantly then we had lactulose n movical. But all the time he had stools which were runny like diahreah(Sp), i mentioned it to peads at every visit and they just said its the way his stools are as diahreah is only the amount of times you go a day. So there is nothing we could do

hi mash, he only goes once or twice aday he is having no meds at all but it is runny and very smelly and there is heaps of it, he has had no meds since beginning of september when it first started,so i dont think it's from them i checked with HV and she doesn't think it's his meds cos he did't have them everyday anyway only when he got really constipated cos we didn't want to get in the viscious circle of his bowels needing something to make him go IYGWIM ,we only gave him meds when he stopped eating or was uncomfortable maybe after him not going for 3/4 days many thanx shell xxxxx

my SIL has just been and i was telling her about charlie and she suggested getting a stool sample tested for coeliacs and allergies to dairy products ,her daughter has coeliacs and dairy allergies and she said his symptoms are exactly the same as chloe her daughter, apparently foul smelling poo is a big give away with coeliacs so we are off to docs in the morning will keep you updated love shell xxxxxxxx

There is a higher chance of coeliacs with Downs, my friend Annie who is 26 has both - once you get it diagnosed and can work with the food it is fine apparently. Let us know how it goes poor Charlie. xxx

well i have just been avin a look round the internet and apparently there is quite a high incidence of kids with DS developing coeliacs and allergies to dairy products the findings were something like 30 out of 47 kids aged between 1 and 16, charlie does have some of the symptoms for both so we are definetly going to the gps in the morning, another symptom is fatigue and i have been saying for weeks that he is more tired but the GP originally thought it was diabetes, then they thought it was his thyroid but the tests came back normal although his thyroid was borderline and he needs to have it repeated in 3 months instead of a year, anyway must go do some housework lol love shell xxxxxxxxxx

well we went to the docs his diagnosis was "toddler diarrheor (sp) " and reflux which he has had most of his life, but i am still not convinced so off we went to tesco and stocked up on dairy free products and gluten free products and i am going to experiment myself and keep a food diary. we didn't see his usual gp he is on holiday for 2 weeks ,i can always go in to him and he will say what is wrong with him, like he's asking for a diagnosis and he always listens to everything ,he believes that mummy is always right as he says you spend 24 hours a day with him,if i ask him for the tests after my experiment he will arrange them, so hopefully by the time he gets back i should have a good diary and i should know by then if there is any difference in him. On the good side the gp did say there is no reason why he cant be at nursery and if they have a problem to ring him as this is not infectious. so i will let you know how things progress xxxxxxx
