hi there,
Hope they manage to Charlie's grommets on quickly, they certainly did with Amber.
Amber got her grommets in as she was having surgery to remove adenoids and tonsills as she has major sleeping difficulties. She had failed her hearing test but not enough to permit a general anaestetic only for gommet insertion.
When she went for surgery they told me that she may or may not got to ICU, the high dependancy ward, they would see in surgery but anticipated the regular ward. After the op she was indeed in ICU and i expected her to be so poorly then, i arrived and she was bouncing on the nurses knee laughing, we were promptly kicked out back to regular ward, sorry i digress.
She recovered in a matter of hours, of course your Charlie won't have these problems as it's just straightforward grommet insertion. For Amber, the grommets have completely changed her life, she started to try and copy words on day 2, and her speech is now incredible 7 months on. It's like a whole dark cloud has been lifted from her, she really is a different girl. The left grommet has come out but she has just passed another hearing test and we do have some ear infection that we didn't have before but for us it's a small price to pay !!! Good luck !!!!

hi everyone, as i told you we had an appointment on the 17th at sheffield for an assessment for charlie's grommets, anyway met the surgeon who seemed nice and he suggested that charlie will not need ICU or steroids because he said you cannot compare the amount of time he was intubated for his cardiac surgery to a 2 minute grommet surgery which i totally agree with BUT his problems are not the actual intubation it's 3-4 days after extubation and the steroids would help prevent any probs but he wouldn't agree with me, so now i am feaking out and got myself in a bit of a state, on one hand i have a paed anaesthetist whom i work with and totally trust saying he needs to go to ICU and steroids and to be kept there until 5 days after extubation and another man i do not know saying he doesn't need any of that, who do i believe?, i do not want to get home and 3 days later ending up with charlie in respiratory arrest like he has done on both previous surgeries and having to go back to sheffield because we don't have a paed ICU .He also said he would get it done in the next 8 weeks as he retires then, and he preferred to get it done before charlie starts nursery.I dont think i can deal with this stress and worry and i am not sure what to do,has anyone got any advice i would be really grateful xxxxxxxxxxx

Sorry to hear that, you must be so worried. Could you delay the surgery until this surgeon retires or would that put you at the bottom of the list again. Hope you get it sorted soon x

I would speak to the surgeon again hun and stress that in previous surgeries Charlie has had respiritpry problems and you would feel more comforted that he at least shows some signs of keeping an eye on it. How would he feel this close to retirement and have a poorly baby on his hands due to negligence? Be mean hun. He is only a Doctor at the end of the day. A person just like you and me. Pretend he is a Dad on the playground who's kid has just punched Charlie in the face and then said its nothing.... Give the man FURY !!!... LOL

Did you explain to the surgeon how worried you are? I think any doctor who knows what they're talking about will always ask the parents for their opinion, because they will know that you are the person who knows the most about your child. Will the same anaesthetist who knows Charlie be involved? In my experience the anaesthetist will make sure the best is done for your child and they will take into account his past history. The anaesthetists who have cared for Harry have always been really cautious and thorough, they will chat through everything with you beforehand, it's down to them to ensure Charlie is ok so if they say he needs ICU then that's what will have to happen. Harrison has had similar problems in the past when he had heart surgery, and when he went for his exploratory surgery (to see if he could have grommits, similar thing to what Charlie will have, although they couldn't do it in the end because his ear canal was too small but he still had the general anaesthetic) he didn't need ICU or steroids but they kept him in the hospital longer to make sure he was ok before going home. Harrison was on oxygen for 24 hours afterwards and then they kept him on the monitor to make sure his oxygen sats had stabilised before we could leave. But he was fine the whole time (except for being completely narked with any doctor who came near him!) and didn't need ICU. This was done as a precaution because of his past history with breathing problems, so maybe they will do the same for Charlie. I'm sure he will be absolutely fine, I totally sympathise because it is stressful for you

well we got his appointment through today for surgery on the 30th august i have decided to speak to an anaesthetist at work tonight and get some advice off him failing that i will speak to charlie's paed next week and get his advice. The surgeon offered no reassurance and no pre op check with the anaesthtist and didn't even offer anything as a precaution so me and paul decided if after advice from an anaesthetist at work and and trying to speak to the surgeon again we will postpone the grommets until we are satisfied that adequate precautions are taken, i know this will mean prolonging it but respiratory problems are so dangerous compared to glue ear, thanx for your advice everyone i will let you know how i get on lots of love shell, charlie and jasmin xxxxxxxxxx

bit of an update i spoke to the surgeons secretary and explained my fears and told her i had spoken to an anaesthetist colleague about our situation she said she totally understood and would speak to the surgeon.Well she got back to me today and said charlie is now to go in the day before surgery for an anaesthetic assessment YAY!!!!they actually listened to me ,and the anaesthetist recommends ITU or steroids or both that is what will happen. So now i feel loads better and am not stressing so much i am still worried but i dont suppose i would be normal if i didn't (i'm prolly not normal anyway lol) anyway so pleased and i will let you know how things go xxxxxxxxxxx

i am secretly chuffed that he cant start nursery yet, but to be honest i think he is ready for it!!!!!!!!!!,it is a huge step the only time i left was for a couple of hours each week for creche and this time it's everyday and before i know it he will be at school full time . He will have to have the other ear done at some stage but it's taken 2 and half years for this one to get big enough lol, apparently his adenoids were huge and really needed taking out. Tina thank you for your lovely comment and you're right he is beautiful, but then i am biased lol lots of love shell, charlie and jasmin xxxxxxxxx
