We went to 'waiting for portage group' on Monday for the first time. Its a group that has been set up for people on the waiting list for portage (which is mega long in our area!) to get together and meet some portage workers and other parents and babies once a week. It was really lovelly and I met 2 other mums who had babies, one of whom had Downs. It was good to get out somewhere with Thomas and meet other people. We had a fab time and I would definately receommend this to other mums now. Going again on Monday.

That's great vick.
I love it when portage day comes and Lisa always gets excited with the bag Judith brings in lol.
Do you have any idea when you'll be getting it at home yet?

Nope. Waiting list is 3 months plus! We've been on the list since beginning of November so it could be quite a while yet! At least we can go to the group tho. I know a lot of areas don't even do portage so the group is brill. Can't wait to start getting one to one at home tho!

Do you know what? Coming on this site makes me realise just how lucky I am living in Devon!
I have been thrown everything, and haven't needed to ask for a thing. We started Portage when Lisa was 5 months old, and it has helped her tremendously. She recognises Judith (portage lady) and loves it when she comes around lol!!
It is a great idea what they've done in your area Vickia I agree with Max!
At least your doing something, and it great to meet other parents too.

Well am really jealous as we do not get portage at all. We used to but the lady left her job about a year ago and has not been replaced grrr!! We have nothing where I live, at all, no groups, no other parents...sometimes its kinda soul destroying and I worry how Leo will cope when he is older. Anyhoo grump over, will phone the lady in charge of nearest Down's commitee and demand to know why she has not been replaced!!
Tace xx

hi adrienne, there is a section a bit further up called 'what do the proffesionals do?' it covers a lot of proffesionals you could come across and explains briefly what they do

with portage in my area they have coffee mornings every so often, i have been to 2 so far and each time i have ended up talking about upfordowns to parents, the majority of people that go have children with downs and it is quite nice seeing all the children playing and the parents chatting over a coffee and a biccie.

thanks, there is a DS group in my area but it is held every last thurs of the month at nite time. i have been a couple of times but i found they talked about activities for the more for the older children. They do offer advice as they have been through everything you are going through. The other thing we do is a makaton class on a fri morning where there are about 5 other kids and their mums, we sing songs and do a bit of sign with the kids. i think that is all there is for us at the moment.
