Makaton is good for helping communicate if they're not talking yet, i was the same didn't know very many words (only what i'd picked up from Mr Tumble) but i managed to get on a course through Brodie's speech therapist so perhaps you could ask if they know of anything like that? Also portage and the speech therapist used to do lots of picture matching with Brodie to help develop his vocabulary even though he wasn't able to say the words yet and they also used Jolly phonics to help teach him to make the different sounds needed in order to make words. Hope this helps. Sounds like Kimmys doing great though and as for the eating stuff off the floor thing i wouldn't worry about it too much, the twins are the same age as her and are still doing that too! lol As for the speech i'm sure it will come eventually, Brodie will be five in August and his speech has come on loads in the last year to the point where you can almost have a conversation with him - in fact sometimes i wish he'd just stop talking for five minutes! lol Take care x x

Hi, I totally agree with Tina about the phonics & picture matching , this is what they recommend at Downs Eductaional trust to help develop their speech . Please do go to this site they have vocab pictures & words you can print off & ideas of how to use them etc . With Rachel we play choosing games, matching games , 'postin' games etc, we use the phonics cards as well , this helps her to hear the diff sounds & now she can make alot of them on thier own & I do believe that this is helping her to form words. We still support her with makaton to reinforce the understanding. Does your S&L therapist give you things to do with Kimmy? As for the picking up & putting things in mouth , Rachel is still doing it . I was told that because the mouth is so sensitive babies put things in the mouth to explore & learn , our children hold this stage longer & can get a sort of sensory satisfaction from puting things in their mouth. Rachel likes leaves, pegs, crayons at the mo . Susan

Me again , I meant to say that i too sometimes look at the other 2 yr olds at Rachel's toddler group & wish things were diff, but then someone will say how well she's doing & I am encouraged . I love those moments with Rachel when she is babbling at me & laughing, those moments are precious memories to hold tight ,because one day she'll be saying 'no' & slamming doors as a moody teenager ! I also meant to say that at our local library I can get the 'Somethin special' dvd out on loan for no charge as they are considered an educational dvd - check it out - i have learnt so much from Mr Tumble re makaton . Right i'll finish rambling now Susan

HI! The early learning centre usually stock all the jolly phonics range - wall frieze, cds, flash cards etc - its good because it is very visual and has a little action to go with every sound. Definatley try to get the something special dvds - Daniel LOVES them and has picked up loads of signs from good ol Mr tumble and Justin. I think we've watched them over 100 times!!! Also... starting nursey is a bit scary (for mummys!) but I think Daniel has come on LOADS since he started and absolutely loves it. Well done Kimmy for saying Bye bye! xx

Bless her... lucy ways dad, won't say mum she also says "ado" which im certain is hello.. she signs more than she can say though. We are slow with signing because i don't do it as often as i should, but its great because the first ones i taught her are drink, more and dinner oh and the favourite biscuit!, so we cover a lot of options with those, im sure kimmy will pick it up really quickly ;they understand so much more than they can communicate x
