Hi Michelle
Rosanna is on the lowest rate of DLA at the moment but i have sent a review form off and they are in the process of reviewing it (could take a few months they informed me due to staff cut backs!). I am under the impression that DLA is totally discounted when it comes to other benefits and should not affect them! I have also been told Rosie wont qualify for mobility until she is 3 years old. You can apply for Carers allowance when you are on the middle or higher rate though. Sorry i cant be much more help than that.. Can you tell me how your little one qualifies for the middle rate? i.e. what you put on the form about her needs. My Rosie has heart problems and is tube fed. Michelle

Hi Michelle, yes I think you will get more Tax Credits for being on middle rate so give them a ring. You should also be able to get carers allowance too x

Yes i agree re DLA forms! The form applies for a child from 0 - 12 years! Well a lot can happen in that time and most of it does not apply to our little ones. You certainly have to repeat yourself a lot too and give them the worse case scenario!! Michelle1987 - i cant get over how much your photo of Kimmy on the right looks like Rosanna! Even down to the 'mohican' hair do lol! ;D Rosanna's hair seems to be ever so long all way down middle of head, even leading to a little pony tail at back. Not much on the sides yet though lol. you only got lowest rate for a baby with heart probs!!! THats terribly - I got highest rate and Caleb has no physical probs whatsoever! The system is ridiculous! It's all down to who looks at your forms - I reckon I got a beginner with no idea! (like I got extra credit coz he wakes up at night and wriggles in his cot so I have to go and help him sometimes - he's 16 months old for goodness sake of course he does!)

I agree with Max, Grace had a heart problem and was awarded high rate, I think its like everything else its a postcode lottery, I would be appealing the decision!!!!

Thanks ladies. They are reviewing Rosie at the moment to include her heart problems and tube feeding. Could take up to 3 months to get decision tho! It should be back dated. I will start calling them after a few more weeks to try and hurry them up a bit. Also if she doesn't bet the high rate i will certainly be appealing! Michelle

I'm still waiting to hear about Jasmine's award althogh not expecting much due to the fact that her health is pretty good. My peadiatrician helped to complete mine and said to be economical with the truth, lol. I suppose I can't have it both ways and should be pleased that Jasmine doesn't have any health problems. Am just going to make sure that anything I get is spent on things to help her development like classes and toys. Does anyone know if they backdate the claim to birth or is it paid from the date on the form? I was mis-advised to begin with that I couldn't claim until Jasmine was 3 months.

Sorry i havent been on in ages! Been a bit busy being in and out of hospital with Rosanna. She got some kind of awful sickness and runny tummy bug on the 16th Feb and had to be admitted to hospital until 28th Feb. She was really poorly and on an iv drip etc. She was discharged from hospital needing oxygen at nights at home so we have that set up and she now has nasal prongs in aswell as the nasal gastric feeding tube. Then we went up to Brompton Hospital in London for her cardiac catheter to close the PDA on the 4/5th March. That went well but has made no difference so they now think the ASD is playing more of a part than they realised so are looking into operating to close that. Also they found she has 'obstructive sleep apneoa' so have put her on a medication to try and help her airways and we have to go back to London for further 2 night sleep study, 1 with oxygen and 1 without to see if any better. If not they might consider removing her tonsils! Also she got awarded the middle rate of DLA but i am re-applying again now as she now needs oxygen etc etc. I don't know it just goes on and on! On a plus note though she is more lively and actually is using her arms and hands now. She has even rolled over twice! and makes so much noise! She is so cute and a really happy baby (unless she is ill). We really are very blessed cos there are so many really really poorly kids at the Royal Brompton with acute heart and lung problems.

Michellebean, so sorry to hear that Rosanna has been so poorly, I hope she is feeling much better now. Good luck with all the tests. About the DLA though you should get higher rate now with all the added care she needs, I'm sure that the higher rate is based on the care the child receives through the night so you should get that now. Make sure you keep coming on here to chat to us, I think one way or another we keep each other sane lol xx

Michellebean, Just wanted to add my best wishes for Rosanna, sorry to hear she is having such a hard time at the mo. Also, adding to what Claire said, you should defo get high rate DLA if Rosanna needs oxygen at home. Harrison had similar probs and needed home oxygen when he was younger and I'm sure I can remember our health visitor saying home oxygen is a clincher for high rate DLA. Great that she's rolling over and making lots of noises, it's amazing how they still make progress despite all their struggles isn't it. Take care xx
