Hi all, just wondered when your kids started getting 'Portage' , how often they get it and is it in the home? We were asked at the cdc ages ago if we wanted George to be referred for it. I said yes straight away, then the next week another mum (whose baby is a bit younger than George) was asked and she said yes aswel. Anyway she started getting Portage about 3 months ago but we're still waiting. We've just had a second letter telling us that due to staffing problems they can't offer it to George yet. The other lady gets Portage through Surestart - don't know anything about this. Bit confused really about how they can give it to some babies and not others (the other baby I mentioned also has ds). Bit worried now that George will fall behind as initially they said it should start at 6 months of age and George is now 11 months and still no sign of him getting it yet ? xx

Holly didn't start hers until after 1 year old. It does all depend on which area you live in, even the difference in districts makes a huge impact.
I didn't realise surestart did portage??? Portage is part of the education board and is under their rules, thats why they only come out during term time. Maybe she is getting something similar???

Leo got portage for a while when he was littler but no longer does, they do not provide portage in Scotland but our local DS commitee had funding for a teacher, which they no longer can be bothered to find funds for (long story, don't get me started) we really miss her she was lovely.
Rilith, surestart are also part of the education board.

I would to claire because that does not seem fair to me! Funny you mention it actually because the hv been out today she mentioned portage and asked if i would be interested which i agreed i would so she said she would chase it up for me, Charli will be 1 in june so maybe it does go on age? hv was really impressed with Charli's development said she is doing fantastic, very social, strong on legs etc, just swelling with pride as we speak lol. Yeh so chase it up claire x

Thank you, I'll phone up tomorrow and ask about it. As far as I know the other girl that gets Portage has the same worker as my friends little girl who isn't through surestart so I'll ask about that too. Does anyone know how to get with surestart? Is it just on the area? Sarah - Charli sounds like she's doing really well, George goes all floppy if I try and get him on his feet, still not sitting up by himself either although he will balance for about 3 seconds. He just rolls everywhere now xx

Brodie started portage when he was 1 but that was only because they had some extra funding for the area of Bristol that we live in, if that wouldn't have come up i don't know when he would have started as the waiting list was so long. It seems to be a bit of a lottery depending on where abouts you live. x x

Finally got through to the people at portage. The head of portage is coming to see us on Friday to do a single visit as they are still short staffed so I don't think it will be a regular thing. But at least it'll get us started on what we should be doing with George. Had a home visit from the physio this morning and asked her about surestart. We're not a surestart area at the moment but she gave me a number to call to see if we can go to a play session thats not far from us. That must be the sort of thing that you said about Sarah x
