Part time SN school & Part Time Mainstream??
We think Holly could cope pretty well in mainstream, but would also like her to experience the varied relaxed approach of SN school too.
When we spoke to one of the teachers at the SN school we viewed about it she seemed to shut right down and didn't say anything positive about mixed schooling at all.
The mainstream school wuold be the same one the boys go to, they are really excited to have Holly there if thats what we want too.
What did you guys choose and why???
Sorry if its really nosey, I am just stuck

we chose mixed for georgia this sept because i thought it would be nice for her to be mixing with teh other kids her own age but unfortunatly they havent got the staff to support her in mainstreem reception part time. Fingers crossed they will have the staff soon she said they have been looking for support. Also ive noticed when shes in her special needs nursery her behaviour is brilliant but when shes in mainstreem nursery its terrible... i dont understand why tho lol

Harry will continue with a split between a special needs school and mainstream school when he starts in september. He has had a split in his nursery placements for the past year and it has worked really well for him. Having said that, all the other kids we know with ds are doing 100% mainstream, but then Harry has more needs than they do. I think some children with ds do great in mainstream but I've had to come to terms with the fact that Harry would probably struggle.
The split with the nursery placements has worked really well so I'm hoping that continues when he starts school, they've said we will take a flexible approach and if they decide he needs more mainstream or vice versa then they will increase/decrease days to suit him.
Does Holly go to nursery at the mo? I think it's probably different depending on where you live but maybe a SENCO in your area could help? xxx

charlie is at mainstream full time from september, throughout nursery it has worked really well and his one to one support teaching assistant is brilliant and charlie and her get on fantastically. No one has mentioned splitting yet ! when he first started nursery though he wasn't very happy at me leaving him, and i did ask his community paed about splitting she said if he is happy and improving to leave him where he was. the school seem to cope pretty well with his illnesses. but like lisa i do fear that charlie will start struggling when he is full time but we will see how he goes, and i will just have a look at the SP schools available in the area should the need arrives. love to you all love shell, charlie and jasmin

Holly doesn't go to nursery.
I was just very put off by the SN teachers attitude towards our wanting mixed schooling, like we were wanting the crown jewels or something.
She is due to start mornings somewhere in January. We have a meeting with the mainstream to see if they will be able to cope with Hollys medical needs, and check care plans and so on. So I spose we will wait and see what happens there

Good luck with the mtg with the mainstream school and sorry to hear the teacher at the SN school wasn't supportive, that can be really off-putting when schools don't support what you want. It will prob become clearer to you what's best for Holly when she starts mornings and you can see how she gets on. I think alot can depend on the key worker and if they have a great key worker in mainstream then that can make all the difference xxx

I think mixed schooling is great and hopefully we'll get cameron into our local dual school. Although it depends on his prescat meeting, which is some people that don't know him at all recommending his education. Grrrrr I think dual schools are the best because they get to do mainstream and additonal support. Camerons nursery is both too and its great theres no big fuss made about integration and he does well in mainstream rooms Luckily theres one 3 miles from us and with a bit of effort we'll get Niamh into it as well, it was planned that Niamh and Cameron woudl go to school together.
