hi susan, harrison's statement process started around the end of 2007, he started school in sept 2008 - so we started the ball rolling just under a year before he started school. harry was attending a special needs nursery and they helped me with the process.
it started with me contacting the LEA, they sent me the relevant form which i completed & once this was submitted they requested reports from the relevant professionals - they're given a deadline (i think it's within 12 weeks?) to submit their reports. The only problem i came across was when the speech & language therapist was late submitting her report and we had to request an extension on the deadline so i guess any advice i would give is making sure everyone who has to submit a report does this on time.
i was lucky to have lots of support from harry's key worker & other professionals who guided me through the process xxx

We are in the process of getting Daniel's done now - he starts in Sep 10 and I started asking about it around sep/oct of last year. Luckily Daniel's pre school is based in a centre where all his therapists and Ed psych are based so we all have meetings together about it arranged by the pre school. Basically they need enough time to provide evidence but not too much that the reports are out of date! So I reckon around a year. They say it should come through around June, in time for School. With my teacher hat on, I would reccomend getting it done BEFORE school as its a lot trickier to get once they are in school, go for as many hours as poss, as its easier to take away/reduce than to get once they are there! xx
