Hi all - Daniel has a squint in both eyes and is suppossed (!) to wear glasses, although his eyes arent too bad. Anyway, we went to the eye hosp today and they were talking about surgery, which would make his eyes more 'in the middle' - it doesnt correct the actual squint, but would look better. Just wondering if anyone had any experience of this operation? Apparently its under general anesthetic but is only a day case. Would love some info if anyone knows anything!! Thanks xx

Hi Sarah, I don't have recent experience of this but Jason had a bad squint in one eye when he was a baby & had it operated in at 9 mths , it was cosmetic and he only developed his short sightedness as he got old nearly in his teens. he had it done under a GA in a day hospital & it was very successful at bringing the eye to the middle. Now after 20 years it does stray just a little out to the outer edge but no where near as bad as the inward squint & they have said if it gets too bad they can operate again to correct it. I think its all to do with tightening muscles to pulll it to the middle not really sure, but Jason was fine all those years ago. Has Daniel ever had a GA before? Susan

Thanks, that does soound similar to what the docs were saying - Daniel hasnt had a GA before, so I'm a bit nervous about that - does it leave scars? Glad to know you are pleased with the results. xx

It was Jason's first GA & i was very anxious, back then 20 yrs ago they let me go down to theatre with him & I stayed in the anaesthetic room with him until he was asleep & then they had back in the recovery room with him as soon as possible as obviusly it is much easier for us mums to soothe their fears than a stranger. There are no scars (you probably don't want to know this but they can sort of pop the eye out of the socket to work on the muscles behind) . I'm sure that the hospitals nowadays are even more child friendly than back then, to make it as stress free an experience for Daniel as for you. I know you can't help worrying, its what us mums do best.

Kacie had corrective surgery on both her eyes recently, and this was only day surgery. She was in surgery for about hour and half and the results are amazing, we didnt really notice how bad her squints were until we saw her after and looked a pictures from before. Her eyes are now both in the middle and before they were quite bad squints. The surgery was just to cut a muscle in the corner fo the eye and tighten it, so this pulls the eye straight. The old operations used to involve removing the eyes, my mum actually had this done to her many years ago, but nowadays thankfully we have better technology, lol. Kacie was out of hospital the same afternoon and after the bloodshot eyes which lasted about 2 weeks, she now has perfect eyes (we think they were perfect before lol). Hope this helps, let us know if you want any more info.
