Hi everyone,
Am going to try not to get too gushy and bore everyone to death with this but just thought I'd let you all have an update.
Jasmine is still doing absolutely great. She's almost taking the recommended feed for a newborn baby now which I think is pretty good considering she's so little. At first she was only having about 1 oz at a tome and she wasn't waking for her feeds. She was struggling a little to get the hang of sucking, swallowing and breating at the same time and I suppose you would say was a lazy feeder because she would just fall to sleep. Gradually she has started to have more and wake up for her milk although she still goes between 4 and 5 hours between feeds. I was pretty nervous when the midwife came Monday as I know all new born babies usuall loose a couple of ounces in weight before they gain, I was dreading being told that she wasn't getting enough food. Guess what, she had gained! only 1 oz but I was still really chuffed. Was also so proud when she finished her full 3 oz feed for the first time and that it was for me and not my Mum, he he.
She is quite a sleepy baby, although just today I think she is starting to become more alert and want to be awake more. She sat snuggled with me for an hour this afternoon just staring at my face whilst i chatted to her.... Very cute.
She is a little monkey because although she very rarely cries, she knows exactly who is in the room and as soon as she is left alone for just a minute, even when you think she's fast asleep, she lets out a big yell as if to say 'oy, dont leave me on my own!'. She loves noise and people talking around her as well as music. She already has her Grandad wrapped around her little finger because he is obsessed with her and she seems to know it.
In terms of her health, I think I mentioned that she had no heart murmour, passed her hearing test no problems. Just have to wait now for her heart scan in the next cuple of weeks and to see the peadiatrician in about 5 weeks or so. My only concern is her breathing but midwife and hospital tell me it is quite normal for any newborn to be a little raspy and rattly, just some mucus that hasn't cleared up yet. It does worry me though because sometimes I think she can't breath properly. Her colour and everything is great though.
Obviously I'm not very experienced with some of the traits for Downs Syndrome babies and children but understand that muscle tone can sometimes be a problem. Well I'm not sure if this is an indication about hers but she has the srongest legs and arms I have ever known for such a little thing. I had to fight with her on one feed today because she wanted to eat her hands rather than have her milk. Nappy changing is great fun as she thinks she is peddling a bike. I'm also amazed at how strong her head is, she can almost hold it up herself and when you put her over your shoulder to wind her she lifts her head right back away from you and throws the odd head butt.
At the moment she has one feed in the night, sleeps from about 12.30 until 5.30 then goes back down until about 10.30 am. Am trying to make the most of that.
Being a Mum is pretty scarey and I just keep thinking this is all going so well and how lucky I am. Am praying that things stay that way.
Will keep you all updated with any news.
Bye everyone,
