Obviously I spoke too soon because after saying how amazingly well everything was going and how good Jasmine's health has been she's now a poorly little mite! She has been suffering for about 5 days now with consipation and is clearly in alot of pain and discomfort when she tries to go to the loo bless her. It's making her unusually cranky and she can't settle. I spoke to the midwife and health visitor and both said it is quite normal for newborns who are bottle fed because often they get dehydrated and that I should take extra care not to put too much formula in her bottles and not to have her too warm. As recommended I have tried getting her to drink cooled boiled water and also a little water mixed with prune juice... it's pretty hard to get her to have it and I've resorted to a sycringe now. I've also been doing tummy massages to get her bowel working and that's the only thing that helps, every time I massage her she manages to pass something and this is what worries me..... I am starting to wonder whether it is more than constipation and whether she is actually struggling due to weak muscles as she seems to go everytime I massage her bowel area. Am thinking of trying a different formular just in case this one doesn't agree with her. It's just hard to know whether Jasmine is experiencing the same as many other new borns or whether it's something more. It's horrible seeing her wriggle in pain and not being able to stop her crying. Do people think I should take her to the GP and get her checked out or persevere with the water and maybe another formula first. I just think 5 days is a long time for her to suffer that sort of pain. Perhaps I'm just being a paranoid first time Mum. Any advice? Thanks, Lucy

Hi Lucy, sorry to hear little Jasmine is suffering at the mo. Constipation does seem to be a problem for our little ones I'm afraid. George's started when he was about a month old and I was advised the same as you, it was blamed on formula, told to give him water etc. I phoned the gp's as it was not better and he said to dilute his formula until George managed to poo - if it was 4ozs of water only put 2 scoops of formula. I did this for 24 hours and it did the trick. Unfortunately this solution didn't last as after about 5 days we were back to square one with George screaming in pain because he couldn't poo. When we saw the paed she put him on lactulose permanently which did work for a while but I think his body just got used to it. He's now on movicol which is working very well. We were also told that when George became more mobile and his stomach muscles got stronger his constipation would also improve. I think this has actually starting to happen now as I only have to give him his movicol every 2 or 3 days. As for Jasmine I would hound your gp and not let them just put it down to formula, constipation is a common problem for a baby with downs. I think sometimes they just try to fob you off. The first time I took George about his consitipation the gp (not our usual one) asked me if he'd had any problems after his birth? When I said yes he was diagnosed with downs syndrome and in special care for 11 days he was very embarrassed - he'd obviously not bothered to look at his notes before we went in. He still tried to blame it on formula! Sorry this is very long. Anyway you are not being a paranoid mummy , you are just being a good one and don't want to see your baby in pain. Good luck and I hope Jasmine feels better soon x

oh bless you and little jasmine, charlie has had the same problem since birth and his paed said it is very common with DS, just for peace of mind if it really bothering you nip her to the GP i am sure they wont mind. You could try adding a tiny bit of orange juice to water that sometimes helps there is also fennel but i am not sure whether jasmine could have it yet !! it may be from 3 months you can get that at any health food shop but i would check the age. and you're not being a paranoid mum it's natural that you worry hun, it shows how much you love little jasmine and how you want the best for her . Hope things improve for her lots of love shell, charlie and jasmin xxxxxx p.s i think there is a thread somewhere regarding constipation it may have some useful advice xxxxxxxxx

Aww poor little Jasmine, Grace has suffered from contispation from she was born too. She is now on 5mls of lactulose every night to help but sometimes even this doesnt work. Grace is a nightmare to try and get anything other than formula and a little water into her for fluids. She does like little mandarin peices but Jasmine is a little young for these lol !!
I would definatley take her along to the doctors and ask for some advise, it will make you feel better too, keep us all posted

Oh sorry to hear little Jasmine is poorly.
Lisa has the occasional bout of constipation, but more often than not, she manages to go...though it is nearly always quite hard poo.
Which formula is Jasmine on at the mo? I found SMA made all of my kids constipated.

I booby fed Caleb so avoided a lot of it but having spoken to lots of other Mums they said that Amptamil was the least constipating so that was the only one I ever used when topping him up. A little tiny bit of diluted orange juice seemed to be good too. I'd badger the Dr too - we all have to push and fight sometimes so might as well get some practice in!!!

Hi all
Just a quick update. I had an appointment to see the doctor myself on Monday and was intending to ask about Jasmine at the same time. However, I changed her food as suggested on Friday from SMA Gold to Aptimil and she is now as good as gold and pooping by herself like a trooper! No more tummy ache touch wood. Bless her! Never thought I'd appreciate sloppy smelly poo but there you go!
