Will start with the good news before I start having a whinge. Harry has now settled well at both his new nurseries and they're pleased with his progress, he's now using PECs and has picked it up very well. He interacts well with the children at his mainstream nursery and gets masses of input at his special needs nursery.
I can't quite believe he will be going to school next september (eek!), he's still so little, but I need to get my head round it quick because I need to get his statement in place so that he gets the right placement. We had a 'team around the child' meeting last week and the opinion was that Harry couldn't cope with mainstream school - I wasn't totally surprised by this but I'm very concerned because quite frankly there's hardly any choice when it comes to special schools. Also since he was born it's kind of been drummed into me that he needs to go to mainstream school because that's where he will get the good role models of speech etc from the other kids. I think I'm going to try and push for a split-placement for when he starts school, similar to what he is doing at the mo with nursery, but I can't see much evidence of other children doing this.
I just wondered what other people's experiences were?? Is anyone else going through statementing at the mo??
Love Lisa & Harrison xx

i tried to do a split but they dont do that over here..or if they do noone seems to know about it ...cory goes to a special school even though he is in the nursery part they work with cory at his level and he is never left out or told he cant do stuff...some people over here dont believe you should send the kids to special schools and push for main but i live in a small village and the school here just cant cope ...i know this as a girl with downs has just left the school to go to corys school and she is a changed girl all i can say is you do what you feel best for Harry you know your son better than even he does and if you feel main is the way to go push and push dont let them try and change your mind......good luck by the way i posted a web site some where on here about getting free pecs you might find them handy now harry is using them

Thanks Tracy, I printed off the pecs from your link a couple of weeks ago, meant to say thanks they are brilliant! Cory looks like a sweetheart and a little character, I love the photos on your signature. It's nice to hear a positive story about special schools, I guess I've been a bit brainwashed by all the things I've read about how our kids need to be in mainstream but they're all individuals aren't they. It sounds like Cory's school is great, I think I need to do a bit more research into the special schools on offer where I live and then make a decision from there.

Hi Lisa,
Glad to hear Harry's getting on well at his nurseries.
I'm going through the statementing process for Brodie at the moment as he's due to start school next September. It's all a bit daunting though as it's such a big decision but we have decided to apply for him to go to our local mainstream school. Had a chat with the SENCO at his nursery, which is mainstream, and they seem to think he's doing really well and as long has the right support in place then he should be fine at our local school. My only concern is that being an August birthday he'll also be one of the youngest in his year so that may not help things, but we'll send him there to begin with and see how things go and if it starts to look like it's not for him then we'll think about a special school.
Like Tracey said you know Harry best so i'd go with what you think and if you can get a split placement it sounds like that would be great.
Good luck with filling out the forms, i've just been sent the first lot through to put down what help i think Brodie will need and they have to be in in 2 weeks time so i'd better try and get round to filling them in!

Sounds like Brodie is doing great, bless him. I know what you mean about worrying when they're the youngest in the year, that's really encouraging though if the SENCO thinks Brodie will be ok in mainstream. I still keep going back and forth in my mind about what's best for Harry, I need to decide around Jan/Feb time so at least I've got a couple more months to ponder I've been told I need to write a letter and a report to get the ball rolling for Harry with his statement, the things they are asking me to put in the report means I'll probably end up writing pages and pages! Luckily Harry's specialist nurse advisor is coming to help me to make sure I get the right points across. Good luck with filling out the forms for Brodie too, hope they're not too time-consuming, there aren't really enough hours in the day for looking after kiddies, filling in forms and xmas shopping is there?! xx
