Hi everyone, need some advise. We are having a lot of bother with Graces fluid intake over the last month or so. I have an appointment with the doc tomorrow so will ask his advise but thought some of you might have some ideas in the meantime.
Over the space of a day grace is only taking around9-12 ounces. She gets her porridge in the morning and she takes about 2 ounces, then with her lunch she will take a few sips of drink, but only because we are practically forcing her to take it. Then around 3pm I try to get her to take a few ounces of something, usually progress milk. Then finally she takes a 6 oz bottle before bed, sometimes she finishes this and sometimes she doesn't. She seems well enough hydrated so I am assuming that she is getting what she needs but the main issue is that she gets lactulose to help her poo and as far as I know this is an osmotic laxative which requires her to drink plenty in order to get it to work. She is very reluctant to drink anything other than her progress milk and really the only other thing she does like is a drop of tea which I am aware is not the best thing but it has got to the stage where I will purposely make her tea just to try to get her to drink. Her eating is fine. Any ideas wold be greatly appreciated,
Thanks in advance

I had a problem with Jack not drinking enough milk and when i spoke to the dietician she told me that as long as he was taking yougarts and cheese along with whatever milk to make up his calcuim it was fine and just try and get him to drink whatever fluids we can.
We use a little Summer Fruit with water and some days he could drink 16 ozs of this.
He also likes Earl Gray tea which i dont mind giving to him as the ordinary tea seems to make my two hyper.
I know that you would try anything just to get the fluids into them.
I forgot what about the fruit shoots watered down??
Good luck

Gemma wont drink water or squash at all, she has about 15 oz cows milk a day plus her weetabix with milk on Ive tried loads of different cups\bottles etc and she just wont have it. I have mentioned it to my Health Visitor and she says what she is drinking is fine. Is Grace on cows milk? Thats quite a good idea bout the fruit shoots I might try that with Gemma xx

George used to be terrible for drinking anything other than milk. Like you I tried every type of baby juice, flavoured water etc but in the end the only thing I could get him to drink was pure apple juice (normal stuff not baby) watered down half and half with boiled water. He really likes this now and has between 5 and 10 ozs a day aswell as his milk. Have you tried Grace on cows milk? I always think the progress milk seems thicker so maybe she gets full more quickly from that. Also i give George his bottle of milk before his cereal in the morning so he's already drank most of it by the time his breakfast is ready. Can't think of anything else for you to try but hope you get on ok at the docs tomorrow xxx

hi just thought i would let you know what Charli's dietcian said on Wednesday about Charli's lack of fluid intake, i was really worried about how little she drinks she has roughly 400mls a day of Infatrini and only a few sips of water juice etc through out the day and that is at a push like most people we have spent a fortune on cups/ bottles etc, any how she said that alot of children with and without ds dont seem to drink much and that there is hidden fluid in alot of foods so they do get more than we think as long as her nappy's are not dry, tongue is moist and soft spot not indented then she is getting enough and she basically said for us not to worry to much as its very common! She has said that she can now be weaned of her infatrini as she is having a well balanced diet but that she still needs the extra nutrients that you get from follow on milk, so now i have the desicion of which one to use, as ive never used formula im not sure, sma progress, C&G step up or farley's follow on? any ideas she said that it has better qualities than cows milk, feel like Charli has reached a big milestone! Anyway sorry to rant on hope it helps you to feel a little less worried x x

Its the Cow and gate progress milk I give her, she has to have everything slightly thickened as she would still be bothered with reflux if I dont. Will try the apple juice and the fruit shoot, have tried sugar free robinsons watered down and she will take a few sips then squirms her face up lol !! Thanks for all the ideas will let you all know what the doctor says

Amptamil is good if your child has problems with constipation. Caleb has ordinary cows milk now though. He drinks 2 x 5oz of milk a day and has water at every meal but sometimes has lots and othertimes just flings it around or spits it out! I have no idea how much actually ends up in the system?!

Well, doctor was unconcerned and reckons that Grace will take as much as she needs, she is showing no signs of dehydration at all and he says if I need to , to just increase her dose of lactulose by a couple of ml, apparently this is the most natural medicine she can have and it doe not cause any long terms problems with the bowels. Thanks for all your help and advise xxx

glad all was ok, like you Shirley it drives me mad that she don't drink much, and although i have been told not to worry about it, i still am, i find that charli seems to cough a great deal when having juice water or even normal milk but she doesn't do it with her infantrini, was wondering if its because her milk is slighlty thicker or is it a behaviour thing?lol

Hi Sarah,
Grace is exactly the same if I give her anything without a small drop of thickener in it. You should ask your speech therapist about this, grace SP was out a few weeks ago to check on her swallowing and has advised that we keep thickening her fluids ever so slightly until the winter is over.

Thanks shirley i will ask about that at her next session, s-t did look at her briefly as she gags alot on lumpy food and does not seem to be trying to chew her food either, already had a few chocking episodes , she said to keep trying to put food at the side of her mouth so she will start to get the hang of it x

Holly will only drink at most 100ml per DAY !!
She has always been the same. No wonder the poor lass poops like mad now she is back on tubey... LOL We have never been able to get her drink any more than that. She will drink from a cup herself now but just dribbles most of it out. Its more of the novelty that she can not that she wants it.

Try those friut pots that you get in the baby food section, with some water, lisa drank really well with this, though you'd have to use a cup, or as Lisa did, a 'doidy cup' (excellent product!!) She can now take any drink, but it did take her a while. I had the same concerns with Lisa when she was Grace's age, but now she drinks loads one day, but hardly anything the next.
