To those of you who have slightly older kiddies - How did you help them to walk? Our Physio just says that C is doing fine but he seems to have hit a bit of a plateau and has been able to stand (with support) for months now but just can't get the hang of moving himself along. if I hold under his arms he will walk along but as soon as he has all his weight (and there is quite a bit of it) on his feet he seems rooted to the ground. I've ordered the books on gross motor skills and fine motor skills in Downs syndrome and wondered if they were any good? Poor Caleb gets so frustrated and I wondered if I was missing any great ways to help his balance or walking? He can't/won't crawl either - just flips over and crys!

Gemma isnt walking unaide yet but to she will walk around furniture. We put stuff on the furniture just out of her reach and if she really wanted it she would move her feet along to be able to get it. We also use a push along truck that has been a great help. xx

the stuff just outta reach is wot i done with cory ..he was walking before his 1st birthday. his physio gave us a baby zimma frame that was waited and he got around with that for a while..also i found he wouldnt walk in his pedro boots that he was prescribed(dont know if you have them) he would only go with socks...any time i wanted a break from him running about i would put his boots on and he would sit still...lol

We have them boots for Gemma, they are very nice but Gemma cant walk in them, they seem quite heavy. They may be better once she is walking properly but for now we just keep her in socks. x

Caleb is 1 (last week) and definately doesn't have the balance to walk alone yet. He doesn't have boots or anything - what are they for? I just want to help him get the idea that he can move his own feet!

Hi Max
Caleb is doing really well. Cai was over 2 before he began walking. He was a very late crawler too.
However, if Caleb has the strength to stand with support then encourage him as best you can. Cai wears the piedro boots too. They support his ankles, which then strengthens his knees - all due to the weak muscle tone.
A few families I know used walking frames with their children and were really pleased with how well they got on. You need to ask for an assessment by Social Services (if you haven't already had one). They will ask an O.T. to assess him for any equipment he may currently need.
Good luck - although it may be best to enjoy him while he's static cos' once he's walking you'll be chasing all day long!
Take Care
M

LOL!! We have an OT - she says he doesn't need anything extra either. I think I'll just get him standing more and try a push along walker thing (NCT sale next week YAY I'll find something there) I don't think he needs the boots as the physio looked at his feet and ankles and said they were fine (though I didn't really know what they were looking for so that answers that question) He doesn't really have muscle weakness but he is hyper flexible (He could join a circus!)
The only things he really wants enough to move towards are the cats - do you reckon I could train them to constantly sit just out of his reach?? Once he can walk or crawl they are going to get NO peace!!

Cameron isn't walking constantly yet but in the last week he has taken steps unaided at nursery and at home, brian says he looks like a zombie because his hands are in the air!! LOL
What we have done is put him in the door bouncer, so he can get his balance, also walking along with him holding his hand is helping.
We were given a push along walker by a mum at nursery, its heavier than normal push alongs as its wooden and has ducks that go up an down at front, making a clacking noise. He loves it and sometimes lets go and staggers a step or two then just sits down.
Hes 22.5 months now.

Hi Lizzy
Do you still put Cameron in the door bouncer as we have one and i thought that Jack was too big he is nearly 13 months. Do you think that it is good for Cameron to get his balance.
