Here's the "plan"... Hubby gets new job (with smallish pay increase ;D) I give up my job which means we have no house as it's tied to my job so... We buy a house where hubby gets a job and I can be a stay at home mum. The problem is that I am looking into what benefits I can claim so we can afford for me to be a SAHM - I really want to throw all my efforts into helping Caleb as much as I can. So far we haven't claimed much at all (child benefit and tax credits) but not DLA or anything. So I know it's a bit personal but what, if anything, do you claim? We really want to stay in this area but it's so damn expensive that we need every bit of help we can get!! We're also hoping to have a nother baby so might as well try to have one before Caleb is too old and I can be a SAHM for both for a few years!

You should claim DLA and if you are not working Carers Allowance although you can work a certain amount of hours and still get Carers Allowance. You should claim for whatever you can after all you are entitled to it. xx

you should definitely make sure you get it back dated from when Caleb was 3 months old. Most people in our little group got turned down the first time for DLA, but make sure you reapply if you do because you usually get accepted the second time and as I said before you are definitley entitled to it. You cant get Carers Allowance until you get the DLA. The form is quite long, my Health Visitor helped me fill mine in so if you need any tips just ask coz I still have a copy of it. Good Luck x

I was told I wouldn't get DLA as Caleb doesn't need extra care as he has no physical abnormalities??!! However now I do actually take him to extra stuff (we started speech therapy group today) so now it is a bit different. What about housing benefit? Carers allowance? Does it change tax credits? Income support and stuff is just for lower incomes yes? It's so confusing - would the CAB be able to help?

Hi Max, yes as the others have said you should defo claim dla then carers allowance. The social worker attached to our cdc told me when George was 3 months old that we wouldn;t get dla for George as Downs wasn;t really causing him to be any different from a baby without it. A few weeks later someone at the supprt group said we should apply anyway so she phoned up for a form for me straight away - we ended up getting the higher rate! They only backdated it to the date that the form was requested so make sure you phone up soon. I think aswel that if you get high or middle rate you get an extra amount in the tax credits too. Hope this helps x

yeah good for you, i know how you feel about feeling guilty about it but at the end of the day we are entitiled to it and it all helps to give our children extra things that maybe if we didnt get it we could not afford if you know what i mean, we had help from CAB, they were fantastic, i was told that the majority of children/people with ds get some level of DLA, i applied and Charli gets high rate, i dont get care allowance as we earn to much, and also dont be afraid to base your answers on the worst day, im not saying lie though hope you understand what i mean, and i dont mind helping you with your forms also. Good luck hun x
