Astigmatism of the eyes. Took George for his eye test today and they said he has this on both eyes. Its to do with the eyes being rugby ball shape instead of football! They want to see him again in 4 months and will decide if he should have glasses. Has anyone had any experience of this. Last time we went they never mentioned it but apparently they were the same then. I'm having enough trouble getting him to wear his hearing aids let alone glasses x

Gemma has astigmatism in her eyes, she also has nystagmus which is a shake to the eye, hers is very mild and we are hoping it stays that way because some children have it really bad and it effects their eyesight badly. We are under Great Ormond Street Hospital for it. With her astigmatisms we were told that it wasnt effecting her eyesight at present, but they would check it regularly. A couple of other children in our group have also been told they have them, and they are also having regular check ups. Im sure Gemma will end up with glasses at some point, but at the moment I have more chance of visiting the moon than Gemma keeping glasses on. She wont wear a hat or have anything around her head, I am battling with keeping a clip in her hair at the moment to try and grow her fringe out. Its a tough battle but I am winning at the moment. Lol. xx

I think its pretty common for kids with ds and just in general - I know 4 or 5 teenagers in my youth group who have it in either 1 or both eyes.
LOL at debs with her battles with hair clips!!....

hi Danny has recently got glasses as he too astigmatism in his left eye and suprisingly he is quite good at leaving them on but I think its because his eye sight was quite poor before he is just amazed at the difference.xx

Thanks for the replies. I didn't know it was such a common problem, I've not heard of it before. If George will look as cute as Danny in glasses then it won't be so bad if he has to have them. x
