hiya,
I've just finished a book called The Memory Keepers Daughter.
www.memorykeepersdaughter.com
The story starts in 1964 when Norah Henry gives birth to twins one stormy winters night. She has a boy and a girl. The little girl is born with DS. Norah's husband David, who delivered the babies makes a snap decision and tells the nurse to take the baby girl to an institution (as was common at that time).
The nurse takes the baby girl to the institution, but can't leave her there so she flees with the baby.
The story then explores the lives of both families over several years.
now, my opinion..... lol
personally i found the book quite painfully slow, it never seemed to flow for me. The author spends a huge amount of time on irrelevant details when she could have spent that time filling in the gaps in the years. I also think more time was spent on the baby boy and his mother and fathers story than on the baby girl and the nurse.
There were huge gaps, where we dont really know what happened with either family which I found quite annoying.
I personally think the author was more concerned with fancy prose than the plot which in all honesty is pretty weak.
However, it was interesting to read about how the nurse had to fight for such basic things for the baby girl throughout her life - although the author could have expanded on that more. It is a nice story - but don't expect to get through it quickly, it is quite hard work.
I'll be sending the book down to Dannii, so if anyone wants a read I can ask her to pass it on to you.
