i have had an idea for an advertising campaign for upfordowns......
it has all stemmed from the fact that i had a HUGE helium balloon from work yesterday.
Adam and i have said that we are going to attach our name and address on the string and let it go just to see how far it goes.
Well, how about if we all get helium balloons and attach our details to them with the website address and see how far they go - we can ask the person who finds it to come onto the site and to post and tell us where and how it was found.
We can get the press involved and i personally think that it is a good idea - we can get the kiddies to let them off on their journeys!
let me know if you are all game

It may not be as good an idea as you hope... just thinking of the 'litter' aspect and some may not appreciate that so much... also, would you be targeting your desired audience?
In marketing and design you would want to consider your target audience to ensure it was something that the people finding these would have a need for. For example, if you find a balloon scrap on the ground, A. Would you pick it up? B. If it advertised a speciality website for say car mechanics would you bother with going online to say where you found it? Not that you are like a car mechanic and I'm not trivialising it, I'm just pointing out that if you don't have any interest or think you have any interest in what you read would you visit their website?
Also, and this is the most important... Balloons have warnings to keep from children until approximately age 8 as they break and can cause suffocation in young children who may not know they shouldn't put them into their mouths or on their faces. Can you guarantee some little one won't pick up a scrap of balloon and put it in their mouth?
Perhaps the DSA convention would be a better place to give out balloons with your message on them? I would think this would be a fantastic idea for that.
Again, I'm not trying to 'burst your balloon' (sorry VERY lame pun!) and I would love to help you come up with ideas if you'd like. One of my careers is in graphic design, web design and marketing so I have some great resources and contacts if you have any interest.

I am sorry you feel this way Kim, but lets look at this retrospectivly. A. Scraps of baloons on the ground are not going to draw that much attention given the rubbish in our streets and parks nowadays, there is a higher chance a child wouldpick up a used condom, or needle than the scrap od a baloon B. Curiosity killed the cat, I would say that a fair majority of people finding a logo'd be it baloon, card or anything nowadays would go and have a look, and if its a site like this or ours, that if it did not interest them I am sure they know someone who would benefit from it. C. As fr children finding them, I would think that children would not eat them if they found them, and children would be attended by parents who dont have the intuition or knowledge not to.
This is my veiw on what you said, as I do believe that this is a great idea and would "fly"

I am sorry you feel this way Kim, but lets look at this retrospectivly. A. Scraps of baloons on the ground are not going to draw that much attention given the rubbish in our streets and parks nowadays, there is a higher chance a child wouldpick up a used condom, or needle than the scrap od a baloon My first question has to be where do you live? Used condom? Needle?
Secondly, the fact you have pointed out for me is that rubbish does go unnoticed. A balloon handed out at a convention is better as they ARE your target audience and they would be the ones that would benefit. Having said that, it really isn't an effective means of advertising in most cases. Most people in marketing and advertising will agree. I've been in this business over ten years. In all the campaigns I've been aparty to, balloons were never part of themB. Curiosity killed the cat, I would say that a fair majority of people finding a logo'd be it baloon, card or anything nowadays would go and have a look, and if its a site like this or ours, that if it did not interest them I am sure they know someone who would benefit from it. Ok, we've already established the fact that very few people, if any, would pick up a scrap of rubbish. If I were to see something on a piece of rubbish in the street or wherever I am in London, I would NOT A. stop to read it or B. touch it let alone bring to give to someone I know who may benefit from it.C. As fr children finding them, I would think that children would not eat them if they found them, and children would be attended by parents who dont have the intuition or knowledge not to. You'd be surprised how many children are left to it and ignored when they should be being attended by an adult. I agree, there should be a parent, but having seen a woman up the road from us leave her kids in her car when she goes visiting the person up the road from us too many times, I have to say a lot of parents do not deserve to be parents.
I would rather be guilty of erring on the side of caution than the side of assuming that all parents are good parents. This is my veiw on what you said, as I do believe that this is a great idea and would "fly" I've only given my opinion based upon the fact that my career IS design and marketing. I would love to see this site gain more members and help more people. I would love to HELP this site gain more members. I'm in the process of making a video that will be televised and hopefully put into the standard material given to parents of a child of DS and it would be lovely to have the website listed in the resources. I just wouldn't want money to be wasted that could be better spent.
I should also say... balloons can be lovely and fun... I just think it isn't a great idea. Of course, anyone else is entitled to their own opinions and I have no problems with that. I just was trying to be nice by offering my FREE assistance and expertise.

Maybe you could send some balloons out to your members That way when we go to our Physio/development groups we can take a few along with us for the little ones. Or maybe some pens We can always pass it on to Mum and Dad sneakily...LOL Don't be disheartened by one persons opinion hun. There are loads of advertising campaigns out there that are cheap and affordable
