Caleb has fully working ears (as far as we know) but has a head full of glue so needs either grommits or a hearing aid. The hossie here will put grommits in but says I can choose. The thing is I know parents who have gone both ways and say either works but I don't know what to do?!? I just can't see him keeping aids on as he's a bit of a naturist and takes EVERYTHING off given half a chance.
Who here has experience of glue ear and aids or grommits - which would you go for?

hi max charlie has had both, it was very difficult keeping the hearing aids in, he only had one grommet in cos the other ear was too small but he did start making lots more new sounds after it was in, but on the downside he has had lots more ear infections since having it in and i know of a couple of other kiddies who were the same . have you thought about trying the hearing aid while caleb is on the waiting list for grommets, and see how he goes . his grommet has fallen out now and his hearing is quite low cos there has been lots of glue, and we have to wait until later in the summer before they will put him on the waiting list for more grommets . lots of love shell, charlie and jasmin xxxxxxxxxxx

Hi Max, It's nice in a way that the hospital have given you a choice but then again the consultant should be able to say whether he/she thinks it's feasible to put grommets in at the mo.
Harry's ear canals are too small for grommets but we hope that he will be able to have them when he's older and a bit bigger. The ENT surgeon did look at Harry's ears when he was under general anaesthetic for another procedure but he decided not to try putting the grommets in because he said it would cause more harm than good while his ear canal is so small.
I'd say that grommets would be a better option than hearing aids but only if the surgeon is happy that Caleb's ear canals are big enough. The hearing aids can be a pain in the bum with some children but you never know, Caleb may wear them with no problem. I agree with Shell, maybe give the hearing aids a try while you're waiting for grommets. xxxxx
