Hi Laura was seen by the Cardiac consultant on Tuesday and they are really pleased with her so far. The holes in the wall of her heart are quite big and her asd needs split in 2 but they had expected her to have needed medication or to be showing some signs of heart failure but nothing yet. Apparently babies with DS hava a higer pressure in their heart chambers and this is probably what has kept her so well.
They are going to schedul surgery in the Royal Belfast for early Jan which is a lot earlier than we had expected but at least all being well she will be over it by the summer.
Very scary and hard to image but we will take it as it comes.

Hi! It is scary waiting for that date to come through. Ruby had her first heart surgery aged five months. Somehow once you are there you just get on with it!!! Happy to chat if that would help.

Hi Cate, George was 6 months too when he had his op, he went in on Dec 20th, had it done on 21st and was home on the 29th. Its amazing how they just seem to bounce back, we'd be there for weeks I'm sure. If ever you have any questions feel free to ask. Take care xxxx

we met the surgeon in the Royal Belfast on Tuesday laura is on the waiting list the op is still hoped to be beginning of January. He said they think that she hasnt displayed any symptoms of heart failure yet as her lungs are preventing the blood flowing into her lungs but they wont know until the surgery but the sooner its done the better.
Has anyone heard of this?
They will decide on a Thursday and bring babs in for bloods on Friday and back on Sunday for op on Monday. Im glad as we dont have to think about a particular date, scary stuff.

hi there, my son carter had his heart surgery in the royal belfast for an asd and vsd repair in feb 08. His surgery was brought forward as he was constantly going into heart failure and spent his first 4 months in and out of picu in the royal . But he is fantastic now and his surgery was a huge success. It is a very scary time but all i can say is Laura is in the best possible hands with Mr Gladstone who is a genius and his surgical staff and the staff in the clark clinic are amazing. I hope everything goes really well!! andrea xx
