Hi everyone I just wanted to get other peoples views on audio testing, Josh has fluid build up in his ears and very small ear canals and at birth we were told he had moderate loss because of this. He has had hearing aids since he was 3 months old but to be honest they have been a real pain, first the moulds never fitted now he just pulls them out all the time. We have an audio test again next week but i'm not sure that the results are very accurate, Josh seems more interested in the nurse in front of him than the sounds the Dr is making behind him - I'm convinced he hears more than they think but I sometimes think the test is not taking into consideration the fact that he has downs and may not react exactly the same way as every other child. Sorry to go on but its really bothering me at the moment - I'd love to hear your veiws and experiences! Thanks Tracey xx

Hi Tracey I have Rosie's first hearing test this afternoon (had one at birth but thats all) so i will be interested to see you they can accurately tell whether she is not hearing properly or simply ignoring or more interested in something else! I will report back later to let you know what i think but she certainly seems to have 'selective' hearing every now and then (Like her father) lol.

Well Rosie seemed ok to start with. She was looking at the lady in front and when the noise started she stopped still then looked the right way. However she was more fascinated with the toy that moved with the noise than the noise itself and in the end only reacted when the toy moved. The other ear was not so good as she was bored by then and was busy making so much noise babbling none of us could hear anything! She would have routine yearly hearing tests but they want to see her again in 3 months as altho they think she is ok they want to double check for a conclusive result. Selective hearing like her father lol.....

Hi Tracey, Must admit those audio tests/distraction tests don't work well for Harry, mainly because he normally gets in a strop as soon as we walk in the room - he hates any appts now and normally ends up kicking and trying to wriggle his way off my lap! He had a hearing test under general anaesthetic tho - I can't remember exactly how they do it but it's a very accurate way of testing and it showed that Harry has moderate hearing loss (gave the exact amount for each ear), and it also confirmed the hearing loss was just due to glue ear. Hearing aids were always a battle, we got there in the end with the help of tape(!) but he developed eczema in his ears and we had the same problem with ear moulds not fitting sometimes. Now he has a BAHA softband hearing aid, it's a bone conduction hearing aid on a band and he's definitely more responsive when he wears it. We've been told he'll probably need it for a few years and then hopefully when he's bigger the glue ear won't be such a problem and fingers-crossed his hearing will improve. I know having a general anaesthetic is probably the last resort but if you are worried the other tests aren't accurate then maybe it's worth mentioning next time you see the audiologist xxx

Hiya hun, you know my opinion as Jasmine's first test showed some hearing defects but I knew she could hear a pin drop. The next time she was better but was still distracted by the nurse in front because as you know she's a nosey parker. I dont have much faith in the testing TBH. x

Josh has his test on Wed, so i'll let you know how we get on. I've been told there is a specialist Audiologist at Alder Hey in Liverpool who's son has downs and that we can ask to be refered to him but I can't remember his name . If anyone knows it so I can ask that would be great!!

Is it Patrick sheenan? Not sure about surname spelling but I went on a Downs course and he was a speaker there - he sounded great. I'm pretty sure there are one or two people on here that have been to see him - was it Lisajg??

Caleb just failed his test due to glue ear. He had it last winter too but it cleared over the summer. We have to go and see an ENT in the next 6 weeks. They did 2 tests which seemed to work better than the basic distraction one - one where the sound came through a speaker and if he looked up he was rewarded with a picture on a screen, then another where they put a bone conductor on and compared the difference. The bone one showed he had perfect hearing but there was goo in the way without the aid. He would NOT keep the conductor on though so I reckon they'll grommit him if it doesn't clear again. Caleb's lucky though in that he doesn't appear to have small canals and it can clear easier. It was much better at this hospital than the last one we were at (we moved to Milton Keynes over the summer)

Tracey, Sarah is right - Harrison saw Patrick Sheehan at Manchester - not sure if he works at Liverpool too but wouldn't be surprised, he travels all over and is one of the best ENT people you can speak to as he specialises in children with downs, i think he has a special understanding because his son has downs too (and like Sarah said he does stuff with the DSA too). He was fantastic with Harry. You can email him direct if you don't manage to get hold of him through the hospital. Let me know if you want his email address and i'll see if i can find it xxx
