Hi everyone,
So sorry i haven't posted in ages, i seem only to have the time to read and run these days.
I wanted to give a quick update on Elliott. Since birth Elliott has always suffered with constipation, relying on medication and suppositories for regular bowel movements. just before Xmas he was admitted to hospital with vomiting and diarrhea, this left him dehydrated so needed to be put on a drip. The diarrhea turned out to be overspill, caused by compacted poo which he eventually passed, and 3 days later we were allowed home.
All was well until the end of march, when it seemed that his meds had stopped working. I lost count of the amount of times that i took him to the hospital during April in order for him to have enemas, as this was the only way for him to open his bowels.
At the end of April Elliott developed a temperature and started vomiting, so I took him once again to the hospital. I was concerned that he could have a blockage, especially with what had happened at Xmas. However we were reassured by the doc that it was a virus, and we were sent back home. I worried my self sick all night, he was still vomiting and becoming more and more weak. At 5am I telephoned the hospital and we were told to bring him back down, and this time he was admitted.
He was put on a drip, bloods were taken and he was given a x-ray of his tummy. when the X-ray came back the doctor who was now dealing with us booked him for a barium enema. The result of this indicated that it was very possible that he had Hirschsprung's disease.
We were then admitted to a different hospital as an emergency. Elliott needed a biopsy done as this is the only sure way to diagnose Hirschsprung's, however this could not be done straight away as his bowel had become infected through the amount of poo which had been stuck there for such a time. He was put on 4 lots of iv antibiotics and fluids, and was given gentle bowel wash outs twice a day. We then had to Waite for him to become well enough for the biopsy. After 13 days he finally had it done, 2 days later we had the result. Elliott did have Hirschsprung's. The next week he had surgery, and he now has a temporary stoma. In about 6 months he'll need more surgery to pull through the healthy bowel and reconnect it to the back passage.
I've gone through every emotion fear, guilt and even anger that it was not diagnosed earlier.
Elliott has taken it all in his stride, I'm so proud of him. He has gone from strength to strength, his appetite has gone through the roof, and he has no end of energy. His quality of life has far improved he's like a different child. I'm so gutted that it wasn't discovered sooner.
Sorry for the long post, but its made me feel better putting it down in words.
